Hi,

I live in the UK and have a 1990 E34 M5, which I shall be selling in the next 12 months. I visit Malaysia regularly and have not seen a model like mine, although I have seen other E34s still in regular use.

My question is: what might the value be in Malaysia? The car is in excellent condition (including working A/C) and I have all the paperwork from new. The mileage is approximately 130,000 miles (about 200,000 km). It is white with half leather interior.
It has the "throwing star" wheels, instead of the period correct "turbines".

Hopefully there is a photo attached.P1080442 (640x480).jpg

I'm aware that it is not technically a "classic" until it is 25 years old, and that an import licence is required.

To be blunt, I am trying to find out if it worth the trouble to export the car to Malaysia, assuming I could find a buyer first.

25 years old would be next year!

Not sure if its still worth to import in, with the import licence and the import tax, but an enthusiast would think otherwise. Where in UK are you? I lived in Bristol for a good 7 years when I left in 2010.

Bring it home. If you decide to sell later, I will take it off your hands.

Thanks for your replies, Haywire and Fadhlan.

The car is not 25 years old until next May, so this is really me doing some research to see if exporting the car to Malaysia is economically viable, for me and for the buyer. It's my impression that the cost of importing the car is probably more than the value of the car itself, assuming a value of, say, RM50,000.

Someone told me when I was in Malaysia recently that the cost of importing the car would be about RM50,000, but I don't know whether that is just the cost of the licence, or tax, or both. Obviously this makes the car very expensive for any purchaser.

My reasoning, which may be flawed, is that I might get more for the car in Malaysia than the UK, bearing in mind the high price of cars in Malaysia.

Are there any E34 M5s in Malaysia?

yes there is a e34 m5 that i know off, and the owner has currently put it on the market for sale. it's a very rare car, and the buyers for it is even more niche. really a willing buyer willing seller kind of scenario.

if u wait until its 25 years old, u can bring it in as a classic car. its not a difficult process, but u can always find ppl who can do it for u.

worth to bring in to make money, i will say its not going to be easy. unless ur car is in mint condition with llow mileage. good luck :)

Thank you all for your replies. From what I have also read elsewhere, it seems that the import costs are effectively doubling the price of the car, which makes the exercise uneconmic, so I will sell it in the UK.

Jut cut the car and sell as a parts (Halfcut),Theres a lot of people craving to convert their E34 520i engine to an M5 here in Malaysia.

Imho, not sure if student ap still applies. But I would rather try keep the car or at least sell it to someone who appreciates it. E34 m5 was the last hand built. It would be a total waste to chop it up in any way

Cheers

Slyder.. r u sure the chopped off parts r not worth more? Lower import duty ma..

if you can buy an AP from student nowdays, then you are so lucky.i calculated everything to bring e34 from Japan to Malaysia, the car price+tax+shipping and etc,but not worth it..because the total its almost 100k.Unless you have a thick pocket, talk with an experience and full of knowledge.
Just my 2 cent.Cheers

howplum,

Are you entitled to an AP?

In any case, I brought my 1994 W124 E36 AMG back when I returned in end-Feb 2011. The AP didn't cost me anything as I was entitled to one. From memory, shipping was something like GBP600 or so (it's more expensive to ship a car to East Malaysia than it is to ship from Europe!)

As for import duties, I paid something in the region of RM20k after appealing against the earlier assessment and getting a 5% discount.

If you are having to buy an AP, then it's no longer economical as current prices for commercial APs are around RM40k. I don't know about the current cost of student APs, but with the restrictions on ownership transfers, it'd not be ideal for you.

If you brought the car in, I'd be interested in buying it...

Cheers,
Mike

I think thread starter is a UK national and owner of the car, and wishing to get more out of selling the car. He is not a Malaysian so are not entitled to any AP. The purpose of the thread is to find out ways to bring the car to Malaysia and sell it.

I think I am right but stand corrected.

Hi, if you are an expat then you are entitle to bring the car under MM2H scheme and its TAX FREE! you may need to keep it for another 5 years before can sell it in malaysia..
