Sorry to open a new thread, but it seems i dunno where to start searching relevant post with my issue1. I feel hot when touching the area below the gearknob, the black leather part, where inside the car is very cold(at night with air-con working), my QUESTION IS: is it normal to feel hot there? 2. and the gear often hard to engage(clutch pedal stopper removed), especially 2nd shift1st shift sometimes(stand still) hard to engage also, other gear smooth...Any ideas???Hard Engagement happens regardless of the engine is cold or hot3. And sometimes when i release the clutch, (the moment i release the clutch and the gear engage) i hear a sound from the back, is tat final drive problem!?4. Sometimes i hear pinging when i lug the engine(especially uphill) is tat normal? currently trying some caltex techron hope to get internal cleaning...Thx!!!

1. That is normal.

2. I'm looking for a solution as well! Very hard to engage 2nd gear. Sometimes first and reverse is hard to engage when stationary :(

3. If it is a 'clunk' sound, it is likely to be a axle or longshaft problem.

Ha !! the famous e34 gremlins..

here is some solutions to your problems and nightmare:

1. I feel hot when touching the area below the gearknob, the black leather part, where inside the car is very cold(at night with air-con working), my QUESTION IS: is it normal to feel hot there?

Normal, unless your rubber gaiter seal is crack or torn, the heat from the engine or exhaust gets in.

2. and the gear often hard to engage(clutch pedal stopper removed), especially 2nd shift
1st shift sometimes(stand still) hard to engage also, other gear smooth...Any ideas???
Hard Engagement happens regardless of the engine is cold or hot

If that is the case, here might be the problems:
1. clutch is wear'ed off;
2. clutch pump or slave pump leaking;
3. or the gear lever/selecter rod bushes is worned, need to replace.

3. And sometimes when i release the clutch, (the moment i release the clutch and the gear engage) i hear a sound from the back, is tat final drive problem!?

yes, most likely or the axle bush is torn or the longshaft is loose(normaly is vibration when you drive off)

4. Sometimes i hear pinging when i lug the engine(especially uphill) is tat normal? currently trying some caltex techron hope to get internal cleaning...

what engine is yours? M50 vanos or non vanos, if non vanos the engine does not have a knock sensor, where else the vanos has 2 nos. could be the sensors kaput. if yours is a 2.0 it tends to ping. also can be your be fuel regulator, injectors(leaking) dirty, clogged fuel filter, anything to do with your fueling... need to bring to the mechanic.

hopefully this helps..

Thx 4 your help!!!

Hard Engagement happens regardless of the engine is cold or hot

If that is the case, here might be the problems:
1. clutch is wear'ed off; Then i have to check...
2. clutch pump or slave pump leaking; Hmm...currently i dun find any leak
3. or the gear lever/selecter rod bushes is worned, need to replace. Changed 1 year ago according 2 my dear father, issue remained

I found some thread said that redline MTL could help...REALLY??? then why BMW tell ppl to use inferior products(SAE-80?)?

3. And sometimes when i release the clutch, (the moment i release the clutch and the gear engage) i hear a sound from the back, is tat final drive problem!?

yes, most likely or the axle bush is torn or the longshaft is loose(normaly is vibration when you drive off) Is it safe to drive for the time being? cause i dun have much Vitamin M at the moment b4 i graduate...

4. Sometimes i hear pinging when i lug the engine(especially uphill) is tat normal? currently trying some caltex techron hope to get internal cleaning...

Mine is M20B20 Manual, somemore sometimes need to crank twice with gas pedal stepped to get the motor started(when engine is hot)...btw,i m using RON97 fuel

hopefully this helps..

I also notice that when the car run in fairly low speed(like below 20km/), i hear clicking sound from the bottom of the car, no matter the clutch is engaged or not, never lower down the window at high speed b4 plus noisier environment at high speed so i wouldn't hear anything clearly at high speed.

Any sifu there can enlighten me?! :stupido2:

not so sure about your question, talk a bit clearer please...

when the car is moving, the sound "click...click...click" coming from bottom of the car, like the sound two thin metal rod hiting each other...repeated slowly, i also dunno how to describe, mayb next TT let u guys identify

Went Albert(Wp Auto)workshop this afternoon. After checking, the clinking sound according to him may come from within the long shalf and the diffrential, need to dismantle to check(including exhaust, long shalf, differential)...

aiyo...looks like big bucks is going to be spent!!

btw, the clicking sound i mentioned actually comes out easier if u cross bump regardless of speed(though i never check during high speed)

i found this http://www.dtmpower.net/forum/archived-threads/53190-driveshaft-noise.html , apparently, Tom aka V12 master has this problem b4, could be exact as mine, clicking sound comes out during uneven road like the long shalf got lots of free play, after engage the gear(the moment release the clutch and the gear kicks in) a "thump" sound comes out...

gota remove the long shaft and check asap...omg...later ppl talk at my back "drive bmw no money to fix dun drive la..." xia suei....:(

sounds like multiple problems.

i suggest you fix it one by one just to make sure and to save some money and from being talked into replacing things that may be able to last for a few more months.

common freeplay and thumping comes from the longshaft couplings front and rear. try to get that changed if you haven't for some years. check the driveshaft joints too

intermittent vibration from the longshaft area may also come from the long shaft bearing near the center of the car. if you haven't touched that in a long time (years) then that should be checked

for shifting problems, it could be due to the shift linkages. bushings and stuff. for clutch problems, it could be due to fluids or the clutch itself.

nothing major, don't worry. and again, it's okay to solve one by one. month by month. Also try not to take your mechanic's presription word for word.

I dun know if its the same problem as I encountered recently......my problem when gear in 3 or 5 i notice that is gear like noise and when I touch the gear shifter can feel some vibration(gear linkage rubbing against the propller shaft) all this when the car is moving not when stationary. All this was caused by the torsion vibration damper has broken off and become loose and rubbing against the gear shift linkage.
Inshort changed the propller long shaft problem solved. But mine is an e36 not sure if u're e34 long shaft has the torsion vibration damper.
