anyone have idea to replace the clucth fan with electric fan?? :p wat i need??? cost?????maybe can find at chop shop??

Bro, I quoted this from Kevster's posting earlier - Electric fan - use the one from an e36 as it is plug and play (some wiring required though) to replace your fan clutch to reduce the mechanical load on your engine. Cost: RM 250 for the electric fan from chop shop and RM 150 for the wiring.

It's quite a hot stuff for the electric fan. Asked around oredi. Expensive wooo... btw, gud luck bro ;)

yeah, anyone's done it to a M20 yet? i wonder if the E36 ones would fit on an M20 as well as on the M4Xs...

M40 electric fan very thick, see kevster's car then u will know...

M20 engine cannot fit... unless u use mercedes W210 last batch super slim version of electric fan... then no problems.....

KiNaKa, any idea how much is the mercedes electric fan setup? Do u have any idea who has done it before?

I asked one my my mech and he was telling the BMW electric fan 'eats' amperage and load up the alternator. advised me to get the japanese electric fan and use the Merc temperature switch.

yeah,
wait till the fan fails.......then you have no cooling down the engine, temp shoots up, overheating occurs, water boils, pressure builds, cracks into any crack it can find, crack any joints that soft, you'll get a burnt head gasket crack cylinder head, blown up valves.......for what? .....just to have cool electric fans.....

but then again, i maybe totally wrong.....

Btween Japanese & Mercedes jungles is a lot to bash. If it's not too much trouble Fabian, could u please find out specifics for this op? :D

Changed my M40 clutch fan to electric fan from an E46 valvetronic engine. Cost me RM400 plus RM65 for the wiring. The reduced load on the engine does make a diff :yahoo:

So how much is the mercedes electric fan? And is it complicated to fix up?

----

I'm having some heating problems when in jams (M20B20) ... the temp creeps up slowly from a quarter to half and then above half, I haven't tried waiting till it went to 3/4s and above. When I'm on the highway its ok ... it goes back to 1/4.

Changed thermosat just 2 weeks ago, the last owner changed the radiator (brand new) last Sept. He changed the pump and the hoses 4 months ago. I changed the top hoses. Check the bottom hoses and they are ok. I've checked my oil and found no water in it too ... no leak @ the cap too.

I thought it may be my clutch fan but I tried the paper roll test and it passed ... any ideas?

I've gone through 2 mechanics (both BMW specialists) already and they can't seem to solve the problem. :(

ludavic,

putting a eletric fan may not necessary help. better go change your clutch fan and etc. m20 is powerful enuff to utilized the cluth fan.

the electric fan for the m40's m42's are good.. as for the 6cylinders engines, forget it.. your car will overheat even when you are moving..

that's why the germans (bmw) left the clutch fans there for a reason. but for the e60's and e90's.. it works cos it's a new engine and cooling system is different.

regards.

somebody told me once that why do you want to change the fan clutch to electic fan, the bmw engineers used a fan clucth for a reason, it was part of the design. wat makes you think you are smarter than the engineering department of BMW. so i figured not to waste my money there and put it in other places.

but then again this is just me, its really up to you

very good deal....

ludavic,
using mercedes benz/BMW electric fan u need relay such as auxilary fan control unit.... cost about below 300/pc for brand new...

nowadays they playing with pulse width modulating signal...
make sure u find some good electrician who can do it la..
or else... i suggest u spend some money buy fan clutch lol...

ok thanks guys ... i'll continue using ori then :D. But still need to find problem of heating.

lunatic,

have you tried flushing the system a few times?
how about checking if the return hose to the expansion tank is not blocked?
sometimes, part of the water pump impeller imparts small rubber stuff that gets into the return hose that will block return coolant from the radiator

another possibility is that your high speed fan is not working or running when temp reaches high temp, and the temp swings tend to indicate clutch fan mechanical wear, in relation to the fan clutch is the V-belt , which could be loose-when was the last time it was changed?

other remote but possible symptoms are the radiator cap faulty, not releasing pressure thus the high heat at low speeds, air bubbles in system, was not bled proper, incorrect valve or ignition timing-for L-jet, which i suspect yours is, it can be done by turning the round distributor, but has to be checked for proper alignment with strobe lights

if you wanna play it safe, there is a way to mod the termostat and fan clutch to have yur temp stable at 1/3-1/4 or about 2 notches below the half temp......no mood now to tell , maybe next time

good luck
