E23 Fuel Consumption

Hi Doc...

It would be recommended that cars from this era use RON98 petrol to minimize 'knocking' and ensuring smoothness. Still haven't gotten the bill from the guys that did the conversion - they want me to use it and see if i'm happy with the set-up first..

How's the car going in Penang?

Been driving a lot, trying to be fuel efficient...but so far RM50 for 25 litres can get me 130km in Penang...wow...do you think I can tune it down. I feel that it stays in 2nd gear too long.

Currently I am using Petronas Ron98 fuel.

Does any of that fuel saving metal thing you connect to the vacuum distributer work? :aggressive:

quite sceptical of these so-called 'fuel saving' devices.. some might be psychological in nature... Was very upset now it costs nearly rm150 for a full tank, up rm30 from before... thankfully i only need to tank it once a week... my dad still uses it as his daily driver...

Well if I put in rm100 it should last me a week. Still I am going to send it for tuning. I hope that will help.

OK this time I managed to stretch the 25L to 160km with careful driving. Was using Petronas.

Doc,

have U try to change from Petronas to Caltex or Shell? I think it would be a diffrent between them! I'm about to get myself an E23 next week and this topic U bring up is really great! What is ur comment on E23 overal? My wife have a problem with her leg and now she have difficulty in driving manual so I tough of buying E23 for her so she can drive to work from Bayan Lepas to Pulau Tikus and plan to use this car for a long distance drive when we go back to Melaka, is it a good idea?

Hi Mell, now with Caltex Ron 92 the mileage is improved, but depends on how much I get cought in jams. Now using the new Petronas Primax 3 and it seems to have more oomph and has good mileage too.

However whatever it is, the E23 2.8L m30 engine will surely drink a lot of petrol. It is much better in long distance. Short distances or stop start traffic, it is actually not as easy to drive as a japanese car.

For your wife I am not sure if it is a good choice. Firstly you say her foot is painful. The accelerator pedal is actually quite stiff in the E23, not like Japanese cars. My left foot actually aches a bit the first time I used it.

Secondly it's a tank, a bit hard to judge parking, but then again you can probably squash any kancil and use other cars as your crumple zone.

But I still like driving it, smooth, quiet, the m30 6 cylinder engine purrs and delivers the power when you need it.

On the highway it is good, smooth as the E23 was bred to cruise the Autobahn!
