helo all sifus.i ve always dreamt of getting a beemer.but just too scared, many people say parts expensive, maintenance high,if gearbox kong very expensive, workshops dont know how to do and all..i thought might as well get info from the users and experts here instead of listening to others.I m eyeing on manual e36 beemer.Anything that i must see before getting it?thanks in advance

If you are interested in a 318 (M), send me a PM...for advice, you can search through the threads you can get plenty of info.

I have a 318 (M). If you don't do any modifications, I believe your fuel consumption should be equal to a perdana. The manual gearbox cost is cheaper, compared to the auto however. 2nd hand Parts from chop shops is cheap (100-600RM) depending upon the part. New and original engine parts should set you back RM 1000+.

Hi bro,

The 318 is a 4-cylinder, 325 is 6-cylinder. 2.5L More engine power, more fuel consumption. 318 is a little under powered, since the car is heavier, 318 manual is still better compared to auto, however. 325 also has vanos. I believe the engine parts will be similar cost (or little higher) for 325 as compared to 318. The 325 can have additional sensors, such as ASC, depending upon the year/model.

The parts to check when you buy a car will be the front and back shocks, steering rack, radiator.
Most of the problems in bmws are either the sensors, cooling system (radiator, water pump, compressor etc), electrical wiring alternator, etc. Also check for any oil leaks throughout the car, if there is a leak, then that has to be fixed.

Take the car to a reliable mechanic before you buy it. Initially, you will have to spend some money on repairs, when you get the car (unless it is in perfect condition). After that your maintenance cost should be lower.

After you buy the car, you can do a full inspection (including the computer one), which can tell you what sensors are working, what are faulty.

Dear subsevend,

Myself had just acquired a 1995 E36 325 (M) in April and been using it as a daily driver for almost 2 months. I was exactly like you, doing a thorough research and finally decided that a manual tranny suits my needs of a beemer (not that autos is not good). Been doing serious research since 2006!

My advise to you in preventing forking out thousands of dollars upon buying a beemer is (apart from the usual taking the car to a trusted bmw specialist for inspection) to get a maintenance report of the car you gonna buy. With it you can know what parts that you MUST change upon buying the car, so if the unchanged parts list is long you know you're gonna be a bit pokai "immediately" after buying it thus the decision is in your hand when that knowledge is yours. Comparing to buying a beemer without a complete maintenance record, the costs of some wear n tear parts might shock us to the point of heart attack.

Myself, upon getting the car, 3 wear n tear items have reached it's time and had to be replaced. 1 fuel pump + 2 floats, driver side window regulator and radiator expansion tank, items which when i checked the maintenance record have never been changed for 15 yrs! IMO not bad for a beemer! The window regulator has rivets holding it meaning it is original item from the factory 15yrs ago. We have to grind it off to take it out.

Other than that, the car works beautifully and now i understand what beemer owners rave about. Not to brag but i always find a reason to drive my car...Coincidentally the previous owner is a member here zulcar9ne.

Been to Mersing to and fro without problems early this month and it's a wonderful feeling. Take my advise, don't rush and make your choice wisely!

e36 325 MANUAL...the way to go..keep hunting bro and gudluck..1 piece advise for you..dont rush to get 1,i waited almost a year to get one..used as a daily drive, almost 30km per day since march, things done..fuel pump, water pump, battery and aircond belt..other than that..superb and no regrets!

ohh 5150 ..that's a rare find as ya unit is the original that was brought in by AB ...glad that you're enjoying it ...

a note to subseven ...just feel what ya hearts say ...if yes go ahead , if no then no point getting one and not being able to maintain it ... of course the journey would be tireless and moolah would be flying high ...but it boils down on what is needed to be changed and some could be prolong towards later on .....

if you've got a complete car with all rims and bodykits ..then it would save you the hassle of sourcing the cosmetic stuff ..and you'll need to concentrate on the engine part ....

enjoy ya hunt ....

Thx iceman, IMHO it was well maintained by previous owners and although the price was a bit high but i guess it's justified....i'm still learning to master the car btw...

If you're looking to perform repairs yourself, I would highly recommend investing in Peake diagnostic tool which paid off for me. I've bought both the SRS and engine diagnostic tool and was able to fix all the problems with my 328i. Key thing to remember with Beemers ... follow the maintenance program. Purchase a Bentley manual as it is a bible for BMW owners.

There are a few maintenance routine I follow .... I flush and replace my coolant every 2 years, flush and replace my brakes fluid every 2 years, changed plugs annually. I've also replaced my differential fluid and manual tranny fluid. These are economical maint. programs you can easily do yourself.
