the website below shows the parts needed for DIY dead pixel repair...if not too difficult, may save around RM100

http://pixelfix.net/eng/bmw.html

hm...contemplating buying one set and try to repair..

E34 speedometer ribbon cable: EUR23.00
Background light bulbs (big x3): EUR 13.00
LCD background light bulbs (small x 3): EUR 13.00
Shipping: EUR 7.00 (regardless to the number of products bought)

Total: EUR 56.00 ( * 4.60 = +-MYR257.60)

or anyone has any idea where to get these parts here in Malaysia?

mick123, called the second number. Belongs to Ms.Lim. She's located in cheras (Shamelin Industrial area), not sure where this is, but according to her the landmark should be Tmn. Maluri Jusco.Call her once ur around the area and she should lead you to her shop. Quoted me RM 450-600.

What I meant was that you can really buy the ribbon locally. my friend 520i was also having the pixel problem. Was working and playing with it about a few years back. Found that the ribbon was damaged (hairline crack on the ribbon). Could not do any thing at that time to repair it.

I knew it was the ribbon because when I move the ribbon by bending, some of the pixel came back.

Broken track can be repaired by using conductive paint (apply like a fine marker pen). I have used it before for PCB repair. However for ribbon cable, the track is too close to each other.

i see...so basically what you mean to say that this would be quite a tedious DIY task then? hmm...

i'll ask my uncle about this later...

Not really. A couple of screw to remove the display from the dashboard.

A few screws here and there (rear) to open the instrument cluster. then should be able to see the ribbon.

Just be careful to not do the testing with the airbag cable disconnect. The alarm will register and need resetting.

Cant remember whether the cable can be removed but think it should be based on experience with ribbon cable.

I got the same pixel display problem, thankfully theres somebody here (UK) that can do the fixing for £80. It'll be permanently repaired as the main part thats giving the problem is the ribbon connector which will carbonise/oxidised after a while.

I havent got around to fixing it yet, but if you guys are looking there is a seller on ebay thats selling the fixing kit (the ribbon cable including the installation manual) for £19 plus £7 shipping for anywhere in the world.

See here:

i prefer to fix mine as i think a used cluster is as what it is - a used one not a recond. so we will not know how long it will last. at least if i fix mine, it should last me for many many years, right?

i bit the bullet and bought the diy repair kit from that ebay seller. trying to save some money cause its a bit tight at the moment, and the repair kit is only 1/4 of the price compared to if i send it to the repair guy here. will post later how it turns up but most probably will try fitting it next week.

a bit frightened to play with the instrument cluster though..
