Hi everyone,I have a 2001 X5 3.0 auto originally a UK car. Recently it have developed a clunking noise on heavy acceleration, sounds to be coming from the drive shafts. On soft acceleration or bumpy ground there is no problem, only when I accelerate hard.Any ideas??Also can anybody direct me to a good reliable garrage in the KL area that knows about X 5's and is not going to rip me off?appreciate the help.deaninkl

gearbox kong liao.

Maybe not. It could be the driveshaft coupling.

BTW Deaninkl, it would be great if you could introduce youself in the newbie section...

sorry for the oversight guys, introduction made on the newbie thread.

thanks for your responses.

Bro, you can PM CPPeng who is also a X5 owner. He can assist you!

Good Luck!

Dude, the best for u is sent ur car to a reliable workshop to check it out. U can try my workshop who is taking care of my X5. Their workshop is Auto Raco @ Desa Tun Razak in KL. U can call Ah WAi @ 0122133854.

why is many people answer when one people answer already is it got money to make

gearbox? quite unlikely!

the clung sound could be due to any of the drivetrain bushes and isolators being deteriorated.

have you car sent to a mech and have it jack up to have all the following components inspected. starting from the lower front of the vehicle:-

1) engine mounting (rarely, unless its been separated from its base)
2) gearbox mounting
3) driveshaft coupling or guibo ( most likely culprit)
4) centre shaft bearing (second most likely, accompanied with a slight vibration)
5) Rear subframe differential case mounting.

also check on the mounting of the mid section of the exhaust as it might move if its not properly secure.

Thanks guy, I'll contact Ah Wai and have him take a look. I'm agree with your thoughts leforte, I'm pretty sure its a bush or such in the drive train, so I'll pass on you list for Ah Wai to check. Cheers.

Well, finally solved the problem.... but expensive. Could not get hold of Ah Wai, so finally took it to a couple of places to check fisr and get an estimate. Both places told me that the front drive shafts need changing about RM 7k... I chose to go with Temtation Motors in Setapak, as the place was also recomended by a couple of bro's on this site.

Mr Low told me will take a day only, so next day I called. Mr Low informed me that after full inspection they found that the drive chain from rear wheel drive shaft to from wheel drive shaft was loose and would need replacing, he told me that if taken to BMW they only replace whole front wheel drive box, very expensive. He could take it to a specialist that inports the chain from Australia, would be cheapear, about RM 4k. Would take a day for the work but had to wait for parts also one day.

Finally it was fixed so Mr Low calls my wife to tell her to pick up.. cost 7k... so I call back to Mr. Low and ask whay the big difference he told me that they made a mistake only chain was 4k.... other parts like seals, rubbers... etc. etc. plus labour.

What to do, I am disapointed with Temptation, this is not a way to act and do business. Car is OK now so that is good. But frankly I can only say be careful with Temtation.

gud to hear your car is ok now, sincerely u should check it out @ auto raco, reasonable price and expertise.

Actually, my mistake for not going there first, I will go there for future work and service. I love the X5, but prices are scary..

no need to worry of the maintenance, as long as u take gud care of ur baby, they will take care of ur wallet.

Was researching on this topic for my x3. So glad to see this opinion from way back in 2008. Hope you're right that it's unlikely to be gearbox :smokin:
