Hi guys,I just got an E39 - 1996 model well kept 2 weeks ago.Brought it for thourough inspection and the mechanic said the suspension arm boost are torn and need to be changed. He quoted RM2000+ for both sides? Is this price reasonable? Then the front lights are not very bright and can;t be adjusted and need to change them he reckons I will need another RM2000+ at least. Is this correct? The car doesn;t have bottom and front tray... he suggests to fix them to avoid sensors being splashed with water during rainy season. Quoted price is RM1400+. Is this reasonable? All the prices above I think without any labour charge yet and he reckons the job witll take him 2 days to complete them. I am still new with BMW maintenance so please advise. Can you also suggest some other reliable BMW mechanic shops with quality work? Thanks.

if i'm not mistaken, my mech charges around 400 for one lower arm, hence the price for 4 is 1600, incl labour. u might wanna give him a tinkle. pm me if you want his number.

as for those under side trays, u can always opt for used ones from the chop shop; will save u a bunch of $$$.

and i think u can just replace the bulbs on your front headlamps; it won't cost u 2k, unless u wanna go for h.i.d.

wow.....the price is really expensive .....

any recommended bimmer workshop in PJ area?

where would be good to send to get a car evaluated? ie. whether it is a good buy or not.

Thanks

my friend.. i want to be your mechanic, CNY is around the corner and i would like the extra dosh..

what a rip off.. so expensive parts.. becareful of mechanic that wants to fleece you off since you dun know much about the car..

regards.

This guy is in Puchong Perdana introduced by another friend...all the notes above from you experienced guys seem that I am putting my head in for a slaughter with this mechanic.

Strat Thanks and I don;t want to be a water fish loooo...hahaha...

Anyway thanks for all the list mate...feel more comfortable with the list.

Bro gshanmg,

1) How could a pair of rubber boots cost 2k???! Unless I'm being real ignorant here.

2) Lights are dim so change cost 2k???

3) Under pan 1.4k??? Have you checked at chop shops??

Seriously think (like what the rest have said) check with other mechs - look at the list of mechs these guys go to before you commit - avoid getting ripped off.

Good luck bro..

Anyone has used the BMW Specialist in Batu Caves? Can I get some feedback on their service?
It is near to my house in Ampang.

Thanks.

Bro gshanmg,

Tumpang-ing godflesh reply... my afterlunch 2 sens...

1) How could a pair of rubber boots cost 2k???! Unless I'm being real ignorant here.
>>>Pua chu khang yellow boots definately cost way much less than that :D
>>>gshanmg: Hop around or call the workshops to get an idea ler

2) Lights are dim so change cost 2k???
>>gshanmg: are you sure it is the bulbs? Might be wiring, grounding etc.?

3) Under pan 1.4k??? Have you checked at chop shops??
>>gshanmg: check around again. chop shops cheaper

Seriously think (like what the rest have said) check with other mechs - look at the list of mechs these guys go to before you commit - avoid getting ripped off.
>>sound advice from godflesh!!!

Sesat88,

I drove my car to the mechanic in Ultimate Motorsport in Batu Caves and my car checked on electronics...cleared all the all memories and the rest seems to be alright and paid RM60...standard I think.

Discussed with the mech and he reckons add in the HID instead of changing the lights as HID cost around RM1200 (dunno whether this is right...is this price alright?).

If the lights are dim, would HID help or changing the whole lights will be better???? Please advise.

He reckons nothing wrong with the suspension arm boost...if there was any prob he says I would have felt it vibrating when driving at 80-90km/h.

So now planning to get the under pan for the engine bottom, HID (depends) and change the air con tensioner.

>> not so bad price.. i know some ppl are charging around RM100 for reset, nyiamah kawan somemore

>> This depends on you. There are some cheap one floating around in the market i.e. around RM400 to RM500. Search the threads. What's the quality well....you decide. ;) If u decide, never cut any wires when installing.. make sure of that. Some niamah "abang" type ppl.. does that.. so take to a proper one. Else.. you are going to have a christmas tree for a UDM.

>> Get to the root cause of why the lights are dim first. It may not be due to the bulbs.. maybe poor grounding, alternator not charging as it is(low voltage) etc. Ask your mechanic to check he should know.

He reckons nothing wrong with the suspension arm boost...if there was any prob he says I would have felt it vibrating when driving at 80-90km/h.
>> yeah.. that's right. If the car can drive ok and smoothly.. there shouldn't be anything wrong with the suspension assembly.

>> hmmm... wat the obsession with the under pan??? unless you go offroading or jalan into some ulu area with rocky roads or going at >150km/h that may prevent the undercarriage component getting hit by UFO. My 2 sens, this seem to be the least of your worries. You can always go to the chop shops or spare part shop to get it. Air con tensioner, why.... ?!!!! Your air con bungkus already meh?

here some advice to spend your dough, beside those issues u r facing now...
- consider changing the all the oils first
- check for cracks in all hoses esp. the vacuum lines
- brake lines... check for aging
- brake pads... wat are the conditions
- filters.. u may consider changing. There are 3 to consider about
- check for leaks
- spark plugs
- tyres... got life span one you know... check...
- sensors
- radiator (check if waterline drops), if so the either radiator, hose, pump need to look into.

hmm... i think some bros here can help you to list down some inspection criterias.
I think there is a standard BMW checklist (inspection I, II, III) list somewhere around here or with some bros here. I got it, i lost it.... :D

The engine undertray/splashguard is important for the aluminum alloy engine block. Sudden and drastic change of temperature can crack the engine block ie: driving over puddle of water and splashed on the engine block. Aluminum alloy is light but it isn't as durable as cast iron block.

oops.. thanks for pointing that out fabian. My mistake. I keep forgetting it's a darn AL block, been too use to CI blocks already

gshanmg: please ignore my comment on that.

Need a splash guard too. Does anyone know the part number? Or where to get it?

Sesat88/KennyG/Fabianyee,

Guys thanks a lot for all the suggestions and advices.

When I took hold of the car 2 x weeks a go I so the service invoice from the ex-owner whic was dated 28/12/2006 and I still got 4 x green service inspection lights on. Am thinking for a full service when the lights drop to 2. Hope that's alright.

Can anyone suggest where the chop shops are around the Batu Cave area? Might want to get the underpan from there.

One other thing...when I start the car the RPM is always below 1000 (500 to be accurate) but the car engine has never died off due to this. Is this a problem or it has been set as such? Please advise.

WRT the air con tensioner to change out... this is due to some noise from the air con but the mech suggested it can be modified instead of getting a new. It seems that's what they do to other cars when this problem arise.

Can anyone shoot me the link to get the Inspection I, II and III for my reference?

Thanks guys.
