Most of the time, the problem is due to bad ground due to body rust.

another advise to older cars is to cleanout all the contacts on the ground wires and also possibly add an extra earth cable from negative battery terminal to the body

as per unker, wirings on the e30 is a simple, maybe can go visit a familair and competant electrician and learn and get tips from what he is doing first, unless you are a DIY junkie like unker jay.......
