Hi,I need an opinion or advise from the forummer on removing the Cat Converter. I heard /read by removing this it will increase the performance and reduce the consumption. Is there any side effect by removing this?

yes la...i also wanted to know whether removing this will benefits the performance or not.... any sifu wanna comment?

Ño disadvantages, maybe loose a little torque and gain back a little hp.

Hi guys,

Just changed my e39 catalytic converter to a convetional muffler & the result is:-

1) Instant power gain
2) Fuel save (at least by 10-15%)

After changing the catalyti converter. I decided to put a full tank of Shell Super saver petrol & drive it all the way to Penang. Surprisingly, average fuel consumption was 7.5l/100km. The last best result I have recorded was 8.6l/100km, that was with a very careful & constant speed.

I don't know whether this is due to the CC or the petrol. I guess both does help to make such a remarkable result. Now I m a happy man with such a modification!

what do u mean by conventional muffler? is it mid-bullet?

Just curious, how much would a catalytic converter cost?

I would think that some of the performance lost and/or much higher fuel consumption are most likely due to clogged cat converter.

Getting rid of the CAT

I did that on my 520i about a year ago,

noticed the following..

petrol consumption improved a bit.

power improved a bit. Less torque though..hp a bit only..

best is the heat from a clogged cat is no more. Engine cools down faster after shutdown..

I swapped bullets for the cat.

above is my observation / opinion only.

cheers

Dear integramania & Cressidom,

Your car is manual or auto transmission?

Suspect my ekzos system clogged also lah..., plan to take out the cat. Mine is auto 525 24v, vanos.

The air came out from my ekzos is hot..., and lots of moisture..., tail pipe is clean.., are those signs of clogged ekzos????

Hi Wan..

mine is M50/24 v engine manual. Clean Ex..doesn't mean clogged..your engine might be more fine tuned...moisture is the tell tale of a good tuned up eng.

Common results when removed CAT:
1. Increase in throttle respone
2. A tiny to moderate HP increase from high rev onwards
3. A tiny to small amount of decrease in torque at lower rev. Mid rev mgiht improve
4. Ligher car - CAT weight like 10kg ?
5. If your car is equiped with downstream O2 sensor, ECU might not like it. Engine light might comes up.
6. Potentially JPJ summons

Disadvantage
7. Louder noise (err.. it can be good to some people)
8. More Nox and COx output - bad for envinroment.

Cheers :)

Agree! When you see moisture (H2O) mean CAT is doing its job.
The purpose of CAT is to convert HOx , COx, NOx, Nx --> to only H2O and CO2

My engine fine tuned?? , ...eh..not so sure about it, but my fuel comsumption is very high lah....

say 26 liters for about 150 km city drive....

easy only lah.., few hours only....., lots of ekzos shop sure closed if take few days...hehe.
