My car have been making a woop-woop sound(about 2 woop per second). Anyone know what it is?There is no warning lights. So doing a diagnosis might not help. (called a few mechs)No loss in power or anything. Last thing I did was service the car about 2 months ago but the id!ot mech put in 20W-50 oil in the engine. Could it be that?Anyone know what might be the issue?Main issue is I am in KK and there are no good mechs around(not going back to the previous mech)(also anyone know any reliable BMW mechs in KK?)I am driving a E39 '99 Double Vanos M52.Thanks

how can M52 be double vanos??

Dude.. which is which? 99 shoudl be M54. M53 is single vanos..

BMW M52
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BMW M52 engine
M52TUB25 from an E46 323Ci (125 kW/245 Nm)
Manufacturer BMW, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG
Production 1994–2001
Predecessor BMW M50
Successor BMW M54
Class Straight-6

The BMW M52 is a Straight 6 piston engine. Displacement ranges from 2000 cc to 3200 cc. It is a DOHC 24-valve engine, originally introduced with VANOS Variable Valve Timing. It replaced the BMW M50 engine in 1994 and was replaced in 2001 with the BMW M54 engine. The world market engine used Nikasil lined aluminium cylinders instead of a cast iron sleeves used in the American market engine. The reason for this is Nikasil is eroded by the higher sulfur content fuel used in America.

A Technical Update or M52TU version in 1999 added Double-VANOS and other modifications.

think there was a Double Vanos on the M52 for 6 months before introducing the M54. But that is another story...

Anyone know what the sounds is?

if you switch off the aircond, the sound is still there?

i have a feeling it is the heater water line. Is your car a CBU with the rest button?? try plugging all the hot water line.

got to get a mechanic to listen to the sound... should be something mechanical which the diagnostic would not pick up.... Need good old human ear... with a screwdriver...

Problem is I am in the land below the wind... all the good mech have been blown away...

anyone in KK knows where to find good mech?

any other fan or thingy there? The issue is that it is not a fast woop'ing sound. It is a low and slow woop sound.

have you checked your tyres area and under carriage? Broken plastic covers under carriage can cause noise too...Happened to me before..my left side cover broken, wind noise can be heard and there was one time, installed not so good, the tyre was rubbing it.

but urs also got sound when idling...

While idling, press your accelerator and see if the 'woop woop" sound increase in speed as you go higher RPM?

If it is slow woop sound, it could be vent for recirculation mode moving. This happen when the external micro filter is choked.

Before you do anything drastic, you need o confirm that it is due to the air vane.

Switching the aircon would not help to determine the problem cos it only off the aircon compressor.

try to play with the recirculation button, demister button etc. If you heard the same kind of sound, then at least you know it is due to the air vane in the Air Handling Unit (AHU).

I am not sure how you to change the filter for E36 but for:-
E36 - It under the steering column
E46 - After the firewall near the wipers.

Honestly, if the sound is due to the vanes, I would just ignore and live with it. It is quite a big job to open up the dashboard to access to the AHU..

Will give it a try. Just a little worried. If the car stalls in the middle of the road then I am screwed...

Thanks bro.
