..hi guys..if Im about to look for tools for car diagnostic, in order to check, clear error codes, or in short, do everything possible, regarding communicating with car on board computer, what device should I look for ?

what model and year is your car?

if your ride is made before 2005, then K + D Can USB cable using INPA would be nice. They are selling for less than RM180 or less now.

If the ride is newer than 2005 then you need another diagnostic like BMW Scanner 2.1.

its Z4M Coupe, 2007 .. what would be proper tool ??

Basically E85 is your "model".

I have scan hakamee Z4 before with the bmwscanner 1.4 and INPA using K + DCAB USB Diagnostic tool. both works.

If you are first timer and not done much diagnostic, go for the bmwscanner 1.40. It is user friendly and can easily scan the error code and reset it.

For more adventurous people, go for INPA. INPA are originally developed by BMW and was modified by some developers to be used with new OS.

There are other like GT1, etc etc..

Anyway, better try scanning with the mentioned tools before ordering.

Yeah, that is quite an all-in-one diagnostic "Swiss army knife". But the main reason is the size of the plug that is smaller than the standard scanner and can fit that tight corner where my ODB plug is stuffed into.

@ Jarance
..so those tools of yours, you have to plug in in to a PC (laptop) and then use some software to read/set values ?? What is the software used ? And is there any place in Malaysia i could order such tools, or i have to order overseas ??

Yes, the diagnostic tool are only the communication cable (USB Port) between the car and the laptop.

Most of the diagnostic tools are from China. I have order about 20 pcs before in my group buy and so far there are no complaint.

I am not sure about such tools are available in Malaysia but you can check Mudah.com or Lelong.com

Yes, most of the diagnostic tools comes with CDRom for setting up the software.

Please take note that the program provided by some of the China supplier are for old operating system like Window XP and 16 bits computer.

I have used the program provided by China and they dont seem to work well with the latest Win 7/64bits computer.

However, this can be overcome by downloading some program from USA/Russia website.

Check out Aidilj thread on diagnostic tool as well. He have given a guideline on how to do it.

I also have the software and I can pass it to you during one of OTT meetup.

Sorry misread your query. You want a handheld.. yes they are more expansive.

Just to share some experience, the BMW Scanner 1.4.0 can pick up some error code whereby even the Autologic Diagnostic cannot pick up. But Autologic give you the troubleshooting procedure and possible fixing methods. So combine both, you can trace the fault code from where.
