Hi sifu's and all members,I'm getting to purchase unregistered 320i 2.2 2001 japan spec. The car dealer said they will service that car for me but i'm afraid they juz do a minor thing. So,i need advise. What should i check/replace the items (xpecially engine part). For ex/interior i can 'tgk2' but engine no so good.tq guyz....

ossy,

Are they giving you any warranty??

Some used car dealers do offer 3 to 6 months warranty.

Merely servicing may not be good enough.

why japan specs?

those imported here are the ones they "scrapped" in Japan. Grey importers get them for a song and bring them in as they enjoy BIG margins compared to UK specs. Probably using East Malaysia APs which are again cheaper.

The BMW Radio may not function

UK spec are also "scrap" from UK, so what's the difference?

Not everyone can afford to buy brand new BMWs.

tq guyz....

Couple of things (list is not comprehensive) too look out for, other e46 owners please feel free to add:-

1. Jap specs cars have differenct CO2 emission standards and so wear and tear is slightly different.
2. Check the Control Arms/ Lower Arms. A 5 year UDM will wear out the bushings etc
3. Oil Sump. Check for leaks/cracks. Make sure the undercarriage "plate" is intact
4. Mods on the cars. As Japanese cars are usually modded vehicles (as evidenced by the number of e46's which "arrive" in malaysia with various bodykits/alloys/etc) check for engine wear&tear. A heavily run car will give you issues.
5. Do the usual Puspakom checks to ensure the car isnt a "kereta potong" or that its been in a major accident.
6. Check the mileage! The meter might have been tampered so if possible, use the ignition key to verify the milage. However, its now a little more troublesom as even the mileage from the keys can be manipulated!

Lastly, contact RedEarthfor details on e46 sifu's who might be able to assist you in picking out a good car.

Good luck!

Also budget about RM3 to 4K for other items which normally have a 5 year lifespan which will need to be changed over the next 1 year....

U would be surprise at the amount of small bits that will need to be changed over the 1 year as you use the car and the cost eventually adds up...

Popeadrian, thx 4 ur advise.I'll to look at it.Yeelooh, baru mau pakai BMW.Some people say Banyak Makan Wang, but I don't care bcoz dah lama gian nak pakai BMW :yahoo: ...
Another thing dah lama i survey with my friend (can be trusted) and we found a few unit that 'illegal' eg: 1 AP 3 car,Singapore unit and i'm prefer
2.0cc and above.
I've found a few uk spec but ada org kata, that british guy 'besar2' and heavy2' so that car 'maybe' kena work hard....
:nyehehe:
And in this case/model xpecially interior my wife manyak suka (clean) and they offer to change a few thing like changing 18' breyton (used), clear white lamp and spray 1 layer.
I hope i've make a right decision :yes!:

safest way to confirm this, drive the car to a specialist for complete check for accident, undercarrige and most important dignos with GT1 (this check will range anywhere between 60-200) if there is any parts defect, ask the dealer to change it. If the dealer do not allow for inspection, I personally will walk away and find others (if the car is in good condition, y affraid to take for inspection right) if he do not wanna change tha parts that is recommended by the specialist, then ask him to reduce further so u can cover your own repair cost. always remember, there is alot of dealer to choose and he's not the only one and u will be buying it for more than 100K not second hand proton that cost 20K. he need u more than u need him

second hand cars are scrap cars ?

I know they are sometimes referred to as crap due to their condition, but never scrap

.... again something new to me

But this is a japanese kit kat... how? (Just kidding, good point you have there daan!)

Ossy if its unreg i guess its around that price, maybe can go lower but not much.

Just remember you have the right to send the car to a workshop to run a full diagnostic and verify the condition of the car you choose.

Good luck!

For UK ones, I know you can check out the history of the car through the VIN.

They have this central database gathering data from insurance companies, police etc. I know because this is how people check before buying 2nd hand cars in UK.

You have to pay probably a hundred ringgit or so and I don't have the website address. But it is there and you only have to search for it.

For Japan - I have no idea.

I need to get an official copy of the record for a Japan imported model. Can anyone advise where to by them??

Bro, if you're still interested in looking at E46....
Í just got my new E46 325i Coupe, and I'm looking to sell my beloved E46 318i (2.0) (A) (CBU, under new AP) 2003.. its near your budget and the condition is rest assured tip top.. i'll take it to CarTrade for a full computerised inspection with you if you're interested...

I just did the Service II recently.. so no repairs needed..

bruders....before i bought mine i insist on checking the undercarriage and do a MODIC with my mechanic...in general, i'd prefer jap specs because...i. they dont use much of cars daily on the road because it is expensive as compared to public...even if they do, the mileage is quite low...but checking the mileage for tempered is easy....
