Brake Pads on E39

Hi ther, My E39 brake pads are due for change, can someone advice me on the type of brake pads available in the market. As I don't have much knowledge on the brake pads I should use.. I heard of "ceramic" types, are they any good, will they make the disc worn off faster? Hope to hear some advice on this.. Thanks Rgds,Alex
