My e39 gives a "Check Brake Lights" warning when I hit the brake pedal while driving. This has happened a few times lately. However all the brake lights are working fine.Previously when a brake light bulb blew up, the warning came only when starting the car and on stopping the engine.Any advice please?

I have the same problem intermittently. Sometime it comes and and then its gone again quickly enough. There was actually one time when the warning stayed, and I asked my wife to step on the brake while I was looking from the back, the third brake light behind the rear windscreen wasnt lighting up. So I'm guessing there's some loose connection somewhere. Didnt rectify it yet though, happens once a month or so, didnt really bother me that much (yet).

ensure the replacement bulb is a hi quality one ie. branded and clean up the contact areas of the brake light socket.....

Yes I used to have this problem too a few months back. Happened few times while driving and starting up the car. But it wasnt always there, sort of comes and goes. Found out the rear left taillight wasnt working properly so took the car to Optimum, they took out the faulty bulb and had it replaced. Shouldnt be a major worry unless its a problem with circuitry I guess. No more gongs now or "check brake lights" at least...
