Taken advantage of CNY holidays to do some research on BMW Warranty & BSRI in other countries and came up with the table above.

I recall reading an interview in the Star last year when the then BMW MD for Malaysia Mr Briscoe was asked the following question:-

“4. BMWs sold in Malaysia have a manufacturer's defect warranty of two years. However, markets like the US are enjoying a four-year warranty, while brands such as VW and Porsche are offering four, even 5-year warranties. Parts and repair costs of BMWs are very expensive, hence an extended warranty should greatly entice a wider scope of customers and make sure BMW is keeping with the trends or even setting one with a better warranty and service package. What is your take on this? Dr Tan Chin Heong, KL

Mr Briscoe’s answer was:-

Wherever we operate in the world, the BMW Group aims to provide the most relevant solutions, which benefit local customers the most. While it is true that many markets and brands have extended their warranty periods, it is pertinent to point out that the lifespan of BMW parts and components often exceeds even the duration of the extended four-year and five-year warranties.

This is why in 2006, BMW Group Malaysia introduced the BMW Service + Repair Inclusive programme, which entitles BMW customers hereto professional service, maintainance and repair for 3 years or 60,000km,whichever comes first. In doing so, we are the leaders in providing our Malaysian customers with the relevant support needed to maintain their BMWs.”

Personally I would prefer a longer warranty period as compared to the BSRI especially whenoil service based on BSRI is every 20000km.

I understand BMWMalaysia had issued a written advisory in Nov 2009 to owners stating that thenew Condition Based Service is set at 10000km for the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] oil changeand 20000km for subsequent oil changes. A friend of mine who has a 2009 E60 gave me a copy of the letter he received from BMW Malaysia on this. The letter went on to state that:-

“Additionally, for better engine protection and peak performance, oil services at every 10,000km is also suggested. However, a more frequent engine oil change such as this will not be covered by the BSRI program.”

For those of us who do about 20000km a year. BSRI will probably give us 4 oil changes, a new air filter and cabin filter, brake fluid, wipers, brake pads and spark plugs if you are lucky.

Therefore additional warranty is much more valuable than free 3 year BSRI especially since F30 & F10 don't seem to be as robust as previous models based on the complaints I read in their respective threads.

I know that BMW gives goodwill warranty after 2 years but buyers should'nt be at their mercy.

Ideally BMW Msia should match their main competitor in Msia ie Mercedes Benz which gives 4 year warranty on all new vehicles.

Even in Spore PML which is a Sime Darby subsidiary gives 3 years warranty with optional BSRI at the buyers costs.

We in Msia pay double (almost RM300k) what buyers in UK(£30000) or US($50000) pay for a 328 but are shortchanged when it comes to warranty and after sales service.

BMW Msia, if you are reading this thread, I hope that extending the warranty becomes a priority.

Otherwise, based on what I am reading in the F30 & F10 threads, you are going to start to lose customers.

There only one solution... STOP BUYING "NEW" BMW

No-lah. With modern BMWs, buying second hand is quite a gamble.

After owing 3 second hand BMWs over the last 10 years,ie E30, E36 and now E90, I'm looking forward to owning a new one someday.

Nothing really beats the smell of new leather in a new car.

However, until prices of new cars are reduced gradually through some sort of reform to our tax system, I'm afraid owning a new BMW may remain a dream for me personally.

I'm hopeful that a change of government in the next GE may result in the reform I'm dreaming of.

RM300-400k for a car that is only worth half is a rip off esp if you are already paying substantial income taxes. Now that's really double taxation!

Anyway, as for BMW Msia, to remain competitive, it should seriously consider giving buyers 4 year warranty. It can offset the cost by making BSRI optional as BMW does in Spore, UK and Aust.

Alternatively, it can give buyers an option ie 2yrs extra warranty vs free 3 yr BSRI.

Which option would you guys prefer?

this is the part what i like n hope can be true soon, hehehehhe....

BSRI service intervals for new 2013 cars have been set to every 12K km. This was in response to customer and dealer feedback to BMW MY. Good to know they're paying attention and responding.

That's great news. But they should actually go down to 10k km interval.

Anyway, 2 yr warranty for a RM250k & > is still not satisfactory when MB is able to offer 4 yrs warranty!

BMW just took the #1 spot in the luxury marques category. I doubt they will extend such 'benefits' to customers so readily. Perhaps if they are fighting to get that #1 spot, they might just be that little bit more generous...

12000km is 7500 miles which is half of the 15000 miles interval which BMW had been promoting.

I guess with turbo charged cars, they just couldnt take the risk of engine oil sludge that haunted early batches of E60 & E90s with the magnesium engine ie 2005/2006 cars.

Anyway thats an improvement.

BSRI in Spore is optional.i believe 12000km interval had been introduced there sometime in 2007.see bmwclub sg forum.

I doubt if they will lower it to 10000km in Msia.

I wonder whether F10 & F30 owners are also needing to top up their engine oil before the 12000km interval.

If you are required to top up at say 8000-12000km, BMW should just do the oil change under BSRI which I doubt they'll do.

Thats why I'd prefer 4 year warranty rather than Free 3 year BSRI.

I hv test driven both the F30 328i &320d. Fabulous cars.Still best in their class.

BMW just has to get their act together.

Longer warranty ie 4 yrs and shorter service interval ie 10000km is a start.

Ultimately, BMW Msia needs to sort out the CKD assembly issues.
