Talking exclusively to Autocar, a senior BMW source revealed that a ground-up rethink of the company’s biggest-selling model will ensure that the next-generation 3-series will “remain relevant even when it goes off sale in 12 years’ time”. Next-gen BMW 3-series techSee the BMW 3-series future technology picture galleryThe new 3-series is expected to make its public debut at the 2011 Paris motor show. In its first incarnation, the new model is expected to offer class-leading aerodynamics, with a Cd figure of 0.24, as well as pioneering the use of three-cylinder engines in premium vehicles. The 3-series is part of a new BMW strategy in which ‘premium’ is defined in terms of environmental compatibility. It is this strategy that has prompted BMW to pull out of Formula One from the end of this year. Hilton Holloway blog: Premium sustainabilityThe reinvention will step up a gear in 2016 when the 3-series undergoes a mid-life revamp. This is expected to represent the biggest technological step-change in car design for decades. Sources say much of the underskin technology — such as the climate control system — will be completely re-engineered. Many of today’s in-car systems have in principle remained unchanged for decades. BMW engineers are already years into programmes that will extend the reach of the company’s successful Efficient Dynamics fuel-saving tech to make all aspects of the 3-series — not just the engines — as energy-efficient as possible. To this end, BMW has fitted thousands of existing customers’ cars with sophisticated black boxes that record all aspects of their use, helping engineers to plan the shape of future models. For example, the research shows that of all BMW’s models, the 320d is driven the fastest and over the greatest distances by owners. This information will directly influence work on replacements for the 320d to optimise fuel efficiency in the light of this model’s particular duty cycle.Much of this engineering work is also aimed at the future ‘electrification’ of the car. BMW’s product planners expect most future car families — especially those in the premium sector — to come in both hybrid and fully electric forms. This means the design of the car’s electrical architecture and ancillaries will have to be completely rethought to deal with being powered purely by battery. Insiders say headlamps, for example, will have to become far more energy-efficient.

It looks fantastic. Can't wait for it to be launched here in what? 2012? Just based on appearance alone, it looks like a massive quantum leap in design. It's about time too, since Merc and Audi's designs have been looking more updated of late. BMW needs to make that paradigm surge forward.

3 cyl turbo engine on a 3 series? Alamak same geng as Kenari and Kelisa turbo heads. Surely its gonna just sound bad in full song and idle much less smoother than a 4 pot turbo! And the reason behind a 3 cyl over a 4 cyl = cut costs???!! Yeah how much cheaper is it gonna be at the end for us premium buyers or the margins go straight to BMW's bottomline leaving us enthusiasts with puny 3 cyls engine to drive around with.

Come on BMW, give us drivers more excitement instead of going all green and cheap. I'll buy a Civic Hybrid or Pirus if I wanted to be all green.

Looking at the picture, the new design looks fierce and muscular. Pop the hood and you see a puny 1.5 ltr 3 potter under it. What a huge PR disaster it will be, as it's gonna carry onto stories about BMW owners/drivers and the size of their weeners for sure LOL.

And Audi is gonna have a field day with their marketing and Ad campaign bashing BMW with the small weener theme. Shame shame..

Don't be surprise that although with 3 cylinders, with BMW vast experience in engine design, it may have the power of 200 horses or more. With such a big and heavy body I am sure the engine power won't be puny. BMW is all about handling and power.

Looks good so far.

The 2011 3-series should get the option of turbocharged three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. In effect half of one of the new-generation six-cylinder units, a 1.5-litre, three-pot diesel should be good for 150bhp and 220lb ft of torque.

The petrol version should deliver 150bhp and 170lb ft but will be cheaper to build because it won’t need the emissions kit demanded of a Euro 6-compliant diesel engine.

220lb ft = 298Nm; 170lb ft = 230Nm.
230Nm sounds pretty decent considering our current 6-pot 2.5L engines give out 250Nm.

Power and torque figures looks fine, but they should have gone with at least 4 cyls instead of 3. With 3 cyls pushing out a displacement of 1.5 ltrs, its a pretty low revving, long stroke engine for sure. Idling smoothness will definitely be compromised as well.

this mass production Nissan LEAF will go on sale 4th quarter of 2010 in US, Japan & Europe..
looks like the cycle of horsepower will start all over again just like the 70s, 80s...90s...where cars' horsepower creeps up yr after yr as technology advances.. and i wonder when will an electric car gets 400BHP where all the fun begins???

Actually E46F, Audi already sell a car with a 3-cylinder engine: the A2 1.4 TDi. Merc is also working heavily on 3-cyl tech. It's alot to do with increasing emissions-based taxes in Europe.

If the new 3-cyls produce good power and more importantly better economy I think people will get used to them eventually. I still remember when in the US they would laugh at anything with 4 cylinders, and even 6 cylinders was considered as so-called "secretary cars" (i.e. for women). Now 4-cylinder is totally normal even there, so wouldn't be surprised to see 3-cyl get accepted, though it may not be that "cool" to own one at first.

During the recent petrol hikes in America the most sought after cars on ebay were 3-cylinder Geo Metros, horrible 1990s cars that were actually causing bidding wars

Yes, agree 3cyl engines belongs to cars like the A2, Kenaris, Kelisa's and Geo Metros :D.

I guess it'll be an engine option only and there will be 4's and 6's as well. I was hoping to hear news of a turbocharged 4 banger with at least 1.8 ltrs as the basic engine lineup for new 3.

I'm really perplexed how E46F got bitten by the turbo bug and is contemplating an Audi for his next car. He should just get the Golf GTi Mk6 as a second car to gratify the urge for blowers.

The end of the legendary BMW straight 6 will be quite sad indeed. 3-cyl will be half what it should be. Who ever heard of half a BMW?

Actually, I've been in a one third BMW. :) The first BMW I ever rode in was as a boy in a 700 Sport belonging to my dad's friend, a rear-engined 2-cyl 697cc producing about +30hp. It was a beauty in it's time. It was the precursor of the 1600 4-cyl, which then evolved into the 2002, then E21, E30, E36, E46, and here we are, at the E90! I've riden in all of these models. :p

There's so much history to the 3s, and that's why I love them.

Wah! how old are u wor!!

Sounds like u were around when BMW was still producing aeroplanes during the 1st world war.. or was it 2nd world war.. :p
