From what i gather the thieves uses a car key cloning device however they still need to use it via OBD II port located under the dash ... Hence they would need to break the window or somehow open the door to be able to access the port.
This is very unnerving. Especially after I browsed through a few of the BMW diagnostic tools suppliers' catalogue: You have less choices of condoms than the choices of key cloners, key encoders and all sorts of key tools available online :O
No, the traditional key without the wireless immobilizers are even more vulnerable. Any thief can follow what they all do in Hollywood movies by tearing the wires out from the steering column and hot wiring them to start.
The best way : steering lock or if you are parking for long periods: disabling a key component of your car (battery, ignition, fuel system) through unplugging or removing it's fuse or relay.
new info i got from a police officer, just a few days back, an X5 was stolen at Damansara Utama area. they suspected the thieves used some kind of a remote decoder to open the door and ignition without having to break anything.
