Hi,I sent my E60 for engine oil changed few weeks ago to BMW specialist. Apparently, the mechanic asked me where is my car thermostat gone? He asked whether I purposely took it out, and I said I have no idea. Since I bought the car about a year ago, I never know it did not have the thermostat. Probably, the previous owner did remove it, for some reason. Can I ask what is the purpose of this thermostat and what happened if it is missing? My car got no problem so far, but I just wondering if any problem if the car does not have one.Sorry my question might be a bit silly and to be honest my knowledge about car is limited.Thanks.

Strange that the thermostat have been removed and your car still can run.
If the thermostat is removed, the coolant would be gushing out from the engine.

Here is the pic of the thermostat. (see item 10) it is mounted directed mounted on the engine.

Looking at the internal part, it quite impossible to remove the internal part as it is riveted.

The mechanic says its actually the thermostat for the plug ??? Do you guys know what does it means ? It seems to be something easy to remove and he said there is no harm to the engine.

I am not sure how many thermostat we have for BMW E60. Obviously it is something different tha being explained as above ?
