I would like to get a e46 318 2.0.Been going through the forum, there is a lot bad comments on this particular model. Is it really that bad? or just so happened to a few unlucky owner? Those who owned or still owning the model, please enlight us newcomer on this issue.Maybe somebody can create a poll on the subjet. Please help,All the Senior members thank you

The electronics can be a bit "manja" for E46 N42 engine, just set aside around RM4k once you get the car to change the necessariy parts (expansion tank, water pump,ATF change, rear axle oil, engine oil, brake pads etc) and get a mechanic you trust to take a look before u buy. So far the biggest problem I got is ABS module not working, it could be the wheel speed sensor but will only look into it after raya I guess.

hey ya
oh yeah im looking forward to own one too "e46 318 2.0" been hunting around last weekend and i would say the price wasnt that bad ... just wondering what other expenses gonna be involve there? or should i look for 323 or 325 to be in the safe side...? oh yeah and its also depends how the previous owner maintain it...!!

Currently a proud owner of 318 M sports. No issues so far, u need to get the experts (mechanics & owners) to advice you, test drive the car 1st. No doubt there lemon cars around..
Anyway, owning a UDM has an ultimate feeling... not similar to any Japs model i owned before..
My advice, get some fund/bank ready for any possibilities.. this applies to all the other model as well...

in my opinion, if u r unlucky, getting a 320, 323 or 325 will be the same. most important is sending your car for a good inspection before you commit in buying. it wont 100% gurantee a troble free car, but it somehow will minimise the hole in your pocket later.

hi Mouse and maximust,

thanks for the advice,
i would say that, you will need least 5-10grand max when you going to get the 2nd hand unit from the finance and bring it up straight to the bmw specialist to inspect the car and fix it before get it on the road...!! ;-) also purely depends what are the parts that need a fix also the cost...!!

im just a bit concern and afraid if me get a large hole in me pocket..! ;-) geez!!

cheers

I´ve been driving an E46 2.0 for quite some time now. And I don´t really find it to be bad at all. On the contrary, I personally find it alot better that the 1.9 model in terms of perfomance, and the pickup is definitely better.

As for the maintenance part of it, it is no big deal. It is just a matter of getting the right mechanic who can do the job properly. If the mechanic is not technologically competent enough, then most likely he would say that this particular model sucks. Because he doesn´t know how to repair! My E46 2.0 has been by faithfully by my side delivering every whims and fancy I threw at it on the road without major issues.

Like what most owners advised in this forum, just get the expansion tank replaced immediately after getting your car plus some fluid change, wear & tear items,...so forth. Roughly set aside RM5k to get it tip-top and you will be covered for the next 50km, aside from some routine service and ppm.

To sum up, it is a very good car to own contrary to popular claims by incompetent mechanics who are already starting to say similar things about E90 since they don´t know how to repair them. More & more E90s are coming out of warranty, and alot of these owners are sending them outside of AB for repairs and preventive maintenance. The same mechanics who say bad things about the E46 2.0 will most probably put down the E90s because they don´t know any better. They are quite a few good workshops in PJ, USJ, and I just found out 1 good one in Cheras as well from other forummers. So, choose your workshop well, no matter which UDM you decide to get. Cheers and Happy Hunting!
