Hi, I bought a second hand 535i few year back. It does not have any issue in the beginning but start to have problem lately. Half year ago, it fail to restart after a short drive. I will think it might be battery issue, so I went on to purchase a new battery cost me RM600+ and the problem is still there. Current condition, it fail to start after a short/long drive but all the electrical functions like lights, signals, radio, wiper and etc are working fine. Whenever I turn the key, there is no sign of the ignition/starter is starting. After a while (roughly 15-30 minutes), it can be restarted. It can be start perfectly in the morning. I get some professionals to look into it but they cant seems find the cause. It is quite frustrated whenever I need to be somewhere else in rush, rather than wait it for a while for it to able to restart I think I need a more practical solution. Anyone of you faced this kind of issues? Please share/advise. :(Thanks

hi bro, get the car diagnose to the nearest workshop. Im not sure as there will be tons of issue if the car wont start. U mentioned earlier that after a short drive that the car wont start? could be the starter? BTW bro where r u staying?

Which 5 series is this? E34, E39 or F10? Don't think E60 have a 535i?

I have sent it to the nearest workshop, but they could not get it troubleshot. What is the sign of starter failure? Will it crank or no sound at all? When I turn the key, it seems like nothing happen (no sound) but all the lights in the meter turned on.

Have you check your HPFP?

I thought if it is HPFP issue, the engine will crank when the key is turned on?

It is E34 series.

IMHO normally if starter is kaput there will no sound at all...or may be fuses....
If starter is ok can crank but engine cannot start then may be other issues...

Aku ada stereng lori....ko adaaa....

I had same problem like you with my previous e36, end up with ad on additional relay to starter

Since it is not even turning over, quite alot of other possibiities can be ruled out.
Grab a multimeter and check the following the: Ignition Switch to the Starter Relay to the Starter, plus the related fuses as indicated in your fuse box.

Yeaaa bro should try this...

Sounds like Starter Solenoid, does the car has a missing heat shield to the starter?

Think so an looks like the issue here is the starter...
Only that its an auto if manual just give a push start then straight to the wirkshop....:)

Thanks

since you've bought a new battery ... there are a few possible cause

1) try to check your battery terminals ( if they are loose while tightening up/ loosen after sometime ) which cause intermittent connection there ..

2) do you get any whinning sound / no sound at all upon cranking ?
if there is no sound ...try to take a baseball bat or broom stick and give a few gentle knocks on the starter motor assy ... upon knocking and if immediately start then it's highly due to the starter carbon brush has worn out ...hence you may need a new/re-cond/chop shop starter motor assy ..

hope this help ..
