sorry.. ijust get back my car... here is the cooling system... is that need a shroud?

Does not make much difference with or without the shroud. Have seen some without and its still fine.

Hi Jin, The overheating does not contributed by the fan shroud alone.
You should look into the whole cooling system.
The Radiator- Check if there are any leaks.
Radiator Cap- With the right Pressure Cap. Sometimes the cap are are of unsuitable pressure thus releasing the steam. Thermostat-Is it working?
Hose-Any leak?, Your return hose from your picture looks kink.
Fan coupling- Is it working?.

Check those first before you start ordering Fan Shroud and find you are back to square one.

Some of our E21 friends have no problem on overheating without the shroud, Some modify and retrofit Merz Shroud, Some addd electric fan instead of coupling. There are many alternatives.

Guys,

What is a shroud? Thxs

xcell60
xcell60,

the shroud in question is this, number 17....but i havnt seen it on an E21...

The fan shroud is important. Without it, the fan is sucking air from various directions. Once, when my fan shroud was broken by a mechanic from the Infamous Workshop in PJ, the boss said its okie to drive and it over heated (temp gauge went to 3/4) whenever my car is stationary (stucked in traffic). Installed back a new fan shroud and the problem went away.

Rgds

mrhartge,

Thank you.

Jin,

How can a shroud go missing from the cooling system, or is this unique to e21? Or is this a f**k up by the previous owner.

Cheers

Early e21s (first 1-2 years) had fan shrouds. The part was omitted in the subsequent year models.

Managed to get one from Ebay. Needs modification to fit the later models. Basically, need to increase the diameter by a little bit.
