Morning guys. Noticed a hissing sound from the engine coming back from tt last night and when i popped up the bonet, i noticed that there were some water and steam coming out from the bleeder screw. After the engine cooled off, I noticed that the bleeder screw which is made of plastic, is broken. The head has detached from the body, the body still inside. HahaQuestion : 1) Can somebody please explain the function of this bleeder screw and how does it work. 2) How important is this screw? 3) I know its not that expensive, but since I am working and in Seremban, I do not want to trouble myself too much and was thinking of just taking the screw ( just the head with just a tiny bit of the body part ) to any spare part shop and try to get whatever screw that fits or matched the size and spec of this bleeder screw. Well, at least until I have the time to actually go and buy the original one. Can I do that..?View attachment 26721Thank you.

Just go to any workshop that deal with BMW. They usually have a lot of these bleeder on the old expansion tank laying
around.

Now your problem is how to remove the part that is broken and still stuck in the expansion tank.

You may need to remove the expansion tank and drill out the broken part with a drill that is smaller in diameter than the threaded part.

OH YES, the part is important as it bleed the air from the cooling system. If there is a leak, you will lose all the coolant and cause engine overheating.

do a search on how to bleed bmw radiator.

OK, the last part for bleeding the engine with the engine running. dont do that. It dangerous.!

Ok thanks a lot bro jarance.
Managed to get the bleeder screw from a spare part shop in Seremban. Cost RM12/-. Phew...

Is ok bro, happen more than once on my car. No need to drill, the body of the bleed screw should have a small hole that you can put a small precision screwdriver in. Use two flat precision screw and try to push it to turn. It should come out, I have done this many times.

Replace with a new one, don't bother with a used one as its quite prone to breaking. My last one only lasts 6 month. Good idea to change to new ones every time you bleed the radiator as it only costs RM11 from BA. Keep some in the car for emergencies.

There are bleed screws made from brass in the market, but the point of a bleed screw is it provides a weak point in case of leakage. If you put in brass screws then you expansion tank or radiator might break.

I faced the same problm last 2 months. The low coolant light pooped up and whn i observe, th bleer scew head gone, left only the threaded part. To make it worse, it happened on sunday when all sparpart shop were closed. So temporary countermeasure, i wrap the opening holes with few layers of plastic bag, and tie with lot of rubber band to stop water from leaking. Managed to drive back tohome safely before the pressure break the plastic bag.

To remove the broken bled screw was pain in ass. Finally managed to remove it by heating a flat screw driver and make a deep groove on the brokn plastic bled screw.

Got a new bleed screw for rm 10. Now keep extra scew in the drawer in case happened again.
agree on the brass screw not suitable. The scew need to be the weaker part. Relace scew is cheaper than ex tank or radiator
