auto tranny overhaul

Dear all, I am experiencing a delay to enggage the gear (4-5 sec) when changing my auto gear of my E34 (1993 - 520). the delay is more prominent when reversing the car. My mechanic (Kayu Ara-OA) recommended to overhaul it. Just asking a second opinion. Anybody experiencing the same problem? Any other workshop that is reputed good in doing the job? Thanks in advance guys.

I'm doing one now for my E36. Should be ready by today. Probably cost me around 3.5-4k. Comes with a year's warranty.

Thanks beemar04. That is what I am afraid of. Even the mechanics there told me the same output (inconsistent result - depend on luck?). On several occassion have to repeat the whole processes again and again (trial and error). Do anybody has any other option/solution to the problem.

Not resolve, I have sold the car, give up BMW banya pakai duit, the new owner have oerhauled the gbox but the prob persist!

my car is a 318i m43 engine is a direct swap if u want it.

that place is at kayu ara near to our place also , from sony turn to the esso service road and go all the way stright and u will find a shop wit alot of bmw there , u cant miss it, the shop name is optimum the boss name is jason ..if im not mistaken the price is around rm 3500 to rm 4000 u can check it out the price ...

visited the workshop last saturday. The gearbox dismantled and expected to finish by Thursday. Will update on the outcome. finger cross.

sorry for the late reply. Its done now. Took about a week coz my mechanic kena dengue fever. No one else knows how to do it except him.

Complete overhaul of the gear box cost me RM4,300 with a year's warranty. Should be cheaper but the mechanic says that the full reconditioning of the torque converter and changing one of the 3 ring band (dunno if that is the right name)..where both alone cost me about RM1k.

The place is at Jalan Genting Kelang. I suggest you ask the sifus around if there's a cheaper and better place. But I believe its better that you took the complete overhaul route instead of changing the entire gear box with a recon unit since you can be sure that the internal parts i.e. clutch plate, gaskets etc. are replaced with brand new ones. I guess that is why those shops that replaces your gear box with a recon unit can only give max 1 month warranty. The inside parts may not last long enough since they're also second hand parts.

just to update on the overhauled-gearbox. got back my car last week from the workshop. Can straight away feels the different. no more delay in engaging gear. smooth-feeling, pick-up better and the best thing is the kick-down is more responsive and more powderful....walauweeee...worth every penny. Total cost just for the overhauling was RM4000. no regret. I fall in love again with my E34

peekaboo , did u do your gearbox at optimum ?... i did mine there .. got the car yesterday .. OMG !!!!!!!!!! total difference ... all my problems were cured ( loud 'thung' when decellerate , gear slipping ) .. like you said , smoother feeling , pick up is much much better , and the response .. same cost rm 4000 with a 1 year warranty ...
