the battery light flickered twice when i floored the accelerator last wedneesday so i removed the alternator and inspected the brushes and they are nearly at the end of it's useful life.i think they can be replaced on their own but the slip rings are worn as well.have anybody experienced if this

Heard it's serviceable but only a handful would actually do it cause it's quite a tedious job. Most mechanics would just tell you to get a 2nd hand one from chop shop or buy new.

Naidu has a contact to do this I believe as he recommended me to service mine before.

moots, is that M20 E34's alternator? I'm sure with your skills, it can be rebuilt! Only challenge is where to get those spare parts, try to search along Jalan Ipoh, there are few shops selling BMW parts, since you have already dismantle the alternator, try to change the "voltage regulator" as well.

or hehe...go bring Mr.Naidu to a nice Indian Rest, and slowly dig from him where to get those parts.

Good luck and keep us updated.

or you can try 3 doors away from JFA motorsport ...there is a electrical refurbish shop where does all sort of work ....air-cond compressor , alternator , starters etc etc ....

wan...no la .this one e39 one.new from bav auto rm1300.from auto bav rm2500.to refurb from the elect shop near jfa ejos about rm 400-500.the voltage regulator/carbon brush assy is rm600 from auto bav.mine is 90 amp alternator.wuz just wondering if the slip rings can be rebuilt and if can...how the process will be like.
i have reassembled and installed the alternator and it is still working ok,just that it WILL need to be looked at soon.

hmmmmmmmmmm........been quite a while since i last did banana leaf rice.....

moots,

Is there a 140 amp alternator for E39? if you are happy with 90 amp alternator, suggest you just go ahead change those parts. About the slip rings, are they so badly worn? do you really need to take care of it? I mean normally carbon brush is much easier & faster worn compare to slip rings, doesn't it designed such way? Eventhough your slip rings are worn, I believe it still can be used (to conduct cuurent), and I think there are some springs at another end of the carbon brush to push them onto slip rings right?

You noticed the battery light flickered twice when you floored the accelerator..., this probably due to the carbon brush had shorten that caused the springs lose some force to push it? another possibility is due to dirty contact between the two..?

just my .0002 cents, come on, you are much much better & capable engineer for DIY, me just kay-po-chee la. Err..., btw, do they have 140 amp alternator in aircraft as well? hehe...

the battery light flickered on me last nite....after a 6 month holiday.so i removed the alternator, removed the voltage regulator and went to a local elect shop and replaced the carbon brushes.....for rm20/-..........he he........i like.
.this will surely give me another 500 years of alternator trouble free motoring ......

moots,

sorry I Still Can't Remember What You Did Last Summer...,

Did you change the brush & regulator last year? or didn't change them but just washing them & reassembled?

moots,
that is a valeo brand alternator?, I have seen some write-up for bosch alternator, there r parts for carbon contact, bearing as well but i can't find any write-up for valeo brand alternator. i took out my alternator (valeo brand) 2 months ago, try to change the contact as well, but try as I did, I just can't take out the carbon, seems like it was solder at both side but the other side is sealed! yes, I have tons of experience using the soldering iron but in this case, I fail, how did u manage to take out the carbon contact?

howdy Wan,no la the last time i took it apart i just cleaned up the parts onlly and reassembled and everything was fine...till last friday......

aangavatar, yes valeo brand.i brought the voltage regulator/carbon brush assy to an elect shop to have them do it.....for rm20.......hell yeah.......

You can get the carbon brushes along Jalan Loke Yew there are 2 shops that sells the carbon brushes. Just bring sample. across the road behind Shell Near Sam Peng flats there is a shop that reconditions alternators.

I gave up and finally paid RM840 for a new alternator (valeo brand), changed it myself.

I believe your "new"" Valeo alternator is actually a re-conditioned unit. European QC and finishes are very good as though it is new.

I just repair and service bck my alternator yesterday at my friend shop.
My battery icon comes out from the meter 2 days ago, after send to my friend workshop to checked notice the alternator was the problem. Service and replace 2 nos of new carbon kawtim and the car bck to normal so my friend charge me $150 only.

Thanks for the info bro :top: Can share the contact details of your friend shop with us?

Great to know that alternator can be serviced..tq for sharing bro

My friend workshop name Senawang Motor Service located at Senawang Light Industry which just the next of Kia Motor service center. FYI my friend workshop was not any BMW specialist and he was the normal workshop which dealing with servicing and repair alternator, starter, car wiring and car battery.

That means we have a cheaper source of alternator repair..many mechs resolve on replacing instead of repairing them..save more on me skinny wallet..
