whats with the altenator change KK? any signs before it stops chargin the batteries?
The signs' are pretty acute:Day 1: Light Bulb malfunction got lit up on OBD. A check with all exterior lights revealed good working condition. Since I've changed the front light and rear plate light to LED's' date=' it will light up occasionally and go off after few seconds. But this stayed lit up half a day, til I did a rapid stop and engaged reverse gear, hell broke loose. Gear Indicator (Red) showed Limp-Home Gear system activated (limited gear change). Then ABS, Steering, DSC, etc all got lit up. Floor the pedal and the car crawls. Audio head unit light dimmed, disc reject mechanism kept buzzing. Till I reached my friend's accessories shop - killed the engine. Can't restart back. Changed new battery - GP Din66 Maintenance Free for RM320. An analysis with multimeter showed new battery not charging. :eek:Day 2: So far car still firing up. Didnt have time yet to go workshop. Was silently hoping it's the battery and not the alternator. Since everything in working order, decided to drive to KLIA and fetch sis. Fine all the way till Arrival Hall. Waited wit engine in idle coz afraid once off the engine won't fire up. 30mins passed, then same thing happened. OBC got lit up light a christmas tree. Limped till reach Petronas KLIA. Engine self-kill, died very slowly. Called workshop, sent tow car. Enjoyed McD @ Petronas while waiting for tow car. Then had a tow car ride with E87 cucuking the rear mirror, hehe. Took half day to settle the alternator. Changed to 150ampere Bosch unit. The damage: Towing (KLIA to Tmn Midah, Cheras RM300), Alternator (100% New Bosch unit RM1800), Labour (RM80), Battery (though not necessary, it's about time, old one was Apr '08 - RM320).TOTAL: RM2,500.00 :stupid:

New Alternator! Actually you can get i refurbish for a fraction of the price. PC Chuah had a alternator replaced too. You said you have LED lights problems on your OBC display.? I can help you out with that. I did a DIY HID conversion a few weeks back. Managed to understand the electrical expect of it. PM me if you are interested.

yup, had a choice between refurbished unit (no time to source) and brand new units. was told by Merc Craft ppl that even "new" unit from BMW is actually recond/refurbished unit and cost about the same as 100% new Bosch?
the car had only done 58K km over the past 5 yrs and the alternator already konk-ed. since im not planning to sell the car anytime soon might as well go for the Bosch unit.

tks bro for the DIY pm regarding the OBD Light thingy. not very well versed in electronics, so not sure how to mod the resistor pack thingy u mentioned. will let it lit up every now and then for now, hehe. tks anyways!

scary indeed bro, but i must thank my lucky stars for on both occasions, i was not stranded in awkward places (even though KLIA is, but stil i managed to limp to the McD-armed Petronas station ). hope nothing else is screwing up anytime soon.
