While waiting for my Z4, thought I would investigate the need for a car alarm. I saw one old thread in this forum on the topic but wanted to know if there have been new developments since then. I know that alarms are merely deterrents, and brand/model depends on what you want to protect against.
  • Do you feel there is a need to protect your Z4 and contents with an aftermarket alarm?
  • Any brand recommendations? Must not void warranty

The advice from AB is better not to install which may void your warranty. Also, senior club members also advised that the alarm may totally screw up the electronics of the car and you will find yourself trying to fix a problem that may become magnified.

Think of it this way. Your car will not be able to start without your key, so there is really no need for it.

Nowadays, the only way they can steal your car is when you are driving it, I think... Yes, scary.

i've thought about this alarm thingy too. bloody stupid excuse from AB that we shouldnt have alarm cos of warranty. they should've given us factory installed alarms when we bought the car. so right now, all that the thief needs to do is break into our cars and help themselves to anything thats in the car, knowing that nobody would suspect anything, cos our cars are SILENT.

I was mainly thiinking of (a) car jacking (b) GPS tracking and (c) casual thieves who steal stuff from the car interior. My Merc W211 even has LLumar security tinting but guess tere is no point for that n a soft top roadster. But BMW does offer car alarm as option elsewhere, wonder why we dont have it here?
