hello guys,i am looking for some advice and help to sort my problem..i drive an e30,1985,320i,auto.been having the car over a year now.there is a toktoktoktok sound arising from the engine whenever it is in motion.no problem wth acceleration.so decided to send it to the mechanic for overhaul .mech discovered the problem.showed me the no 5 and 6 piston koyak, the two pistons has increased by 0.5 mm in diameter, causing a continous knocking sound inside the engine manifold.this is due to overheating, according to himsolution: told me to buy a new set of (6)pistons oversize 0.5mm,6 exhaust valve guide,6 inlet valve guide and a overhaul gasket kit.he said that the engineering will make the engine block hole bigger to accomodate the new oversize pistons.he assures me the sickening noise will go and engine will perform better.is it true?problem: i live in kk,sabah.if i were to buy this parts here i sure bankrup punya.so i have to come to kl to look for this parts.i called a shop in klang..(hometown),all coming to 2.5k plus..roughly lah.so,sifus, gurus, wisemen what is your opinion?has anyone had a similiar problem?is it the right thing to do?my mech is ok lah,not the potong leher punya.2nd option:change to a 2ndhand engine.same problem..sabah susah cari..i went to a big potong keretea shop here in kk,that fellow offered me e21 engine, can u beat that?so,i have to source the engine in kl and ship it over, not easy also..can u guys tell me how much does a halfcut cost ?my mech said if i can get the new pistons better than replacing the engine. What do you guys think?3rd option:eek:f course sabah being sabah, mech said to throw away the bm engine and masuk a toyota sr40 turbo..i think ...haii,my head is spinning...so,guys kindly advice the right thing to do...many thanx in advance....niglo

"mech discovered the problem.showed me the no 5 and 6 piston koyak, the two pistons has increased by 0.5 mm in diameter"

Very curious to know how the pistons can increase in diameter.

yes agree with initial...
convert to other type of engine will messing up with wiring/tubing etc...and all switches, buttons in yr beemer cant b used already... normally new engine insttalled will run erratically like inconsistence engine idling etc as there is no match tubing/host ect for carb or injector to connect .... i trust u will bored and sell off the car after that... i did mine exchanged sentra engine to sunny... many carburetor tubing just hang arround as no place to cucuk on sunny body... engine run erractically... finally sell off...
...for me worth repair existing engine n u will satisfy with it...

just my 1 cent...

niglo.....i wld advice tht u get it overhauled if logistics is a problem...

but if u really think tht u still prefer a better engine upgrade thn go for a 1/2 cut.....

basically, even if u get a 1/2 cut engine etc...wht guarantee tht it will last longer thn ur current one right?

at least if u get new pistons etc...rest assured tht ur engine will perform much much better thn it is now!
moreover,at least if u get new pistons etc, there will be a warantee on the work done by ur regular mechanic i'm sure???

i mean u dont want to go thru all the hassle again is say 3 mths if the 1/2 cut engine kaputs on u right?(u never knw...)

i'm just giving u a worst case scenario....hope u dont mind.
i mean wht with u being all the way in sabah and all...

but for great advice, tok 2 zoggee....he alwiz gives sound and valuable advice.

either way,all the best and remember...in the end its all up to u wht is best...

For me, I would prefer to repair existing engine hence I had all the service & maintenance records, but if repair cost is sky high (like Zoggee's case) , then juz get an engine kosong  .

if it were me i would do a complete overhaul, you would know what has been done, its like starting all over again, less headache along the way, if you are lucky you can find a good condition engine kosong. but make sure the transfer of the engine is legal, otherwise headache later

hi guys, thanx alot for ur prompt and usefull advice, gracias to tyke,paksu,zoggee,skar19,cklim......

my final decision concurs with ur advices.i'm gonna change the neccessary parts.i fully agree with tyke,by rebuilding the engine to stock condition will give me a better satisfaction and much lesser headache.buying a 2nd hand engine will no way guarantee a problemless engine..
like i mentioned before, besides that awful sound i truly love the power and the purring of the 6 cylinders...

will be coming to kl sometime 2nd wk of april.i would love to come to one of your tt's and mingle around.

p.s to zoggee, man u really made ur 8 k worth judging by ur mean looking yellow udm.....

like to find out another info...i was planning to replace my brake pads and discs.thought of using ATEpower disc.what's the difference from the normal ones...what pads u sifus recommend?

thanx again guys...happy to be a part of this very enterprising club....

Zoggee overhaul ker upgrade :nyehehe:

btw overhauled engine will last  ?

if you intend to hard using it i dont recommend since your block has changes (am i right?) better just change engine

btw, this is only my opinion

one more since u say sabah is sabah

which means throw bmw engine for a japs

y dont you source this mechs see if they got the old engine cheap cheap sale :)

niglo.....on the matter of braking components,if ur up for stock oem discs y dont u try Brembo?
its vented but not grooved, retailing for RM110 each disc and is available in many places like 1st division or munich auto...

ATE power disc is an aftermarket dics set tht brakes good!!!
but price wise and availability is another question...

brake pads, theres jurid, pagid and a few other good brands too...
if u want,i can pm u the contact number for the bmw sparepartshops in kl and u can call thm...
