What is vanos seal?Do you own one of the below BMW 6-cylinder cars, 1993-2006? If so then your vanos, engine variable valve timing unit, is most likely failing. These vanos units have been consistently diagnosed to fail due to deteriorating piston seal O-rings. The O-rings are made of a material that is failing in the engine environment. This causes the vanos piston seals to lose their sealing function and for the vanos unit to fail. BMW does not provide the vanos seals separately. It sells rebuilt vanos units for ~$500. New rebuilt vanos units are supplied with the same failing O-rings and have been found to significantly fail in 20k miles (32k kilometers). Vanos seals repair kits are now available from Beisan Systems. They incorporate upgraded O-rings to address the failure mode and replacement Teflon seal rings.Vanos Seals Failure SymptomsOverall loss of torque and power, particularly in the lower RPM range, < 3k. The vanos seals repair kit has improved seals that replace the vanos piston failed seals. This repairs the vanos function and provides improved engine performance and fuel consumption. The vanos rattle repair kit has bearing rings that are shorter than the OEM vanos piston bearing rings and remove axial play in the vanos piston bearings to prevent vanos rattle.

The vanos piston is mounted to the splined shaft. This allows it to manipulate the axial position of the splined shaft and in turn the camshaft to enact variable valve timing. The splined shaft spins with the camshaft and sprocket at camshaft speed. To prevent the vanos piston from also spinning the piston has a bearing at its center and the splined shaft is mounted to it. This allows the piston to position the splined shaft axially but not rotate with the splined shaft, which would damage the piston and vanos.

Unfortunately the piston bearing is manufactured sloppily and has axial play (space). This allows the camshaft to engage this play axially back and forth as it compresses and decompresses valve springs. These back and forth bearing axial play movements can resonate, and when they do a vanos rattle occurs. This resonance and rattle occurs at a limited RPM range and usually occurs at idle and/or around 2k RPM.

All the vanos units have piston bearing play and thus can all rattle. Further, none of them should have this play and it’s best to remove it. The vanos rattle repair kit does this by replacing the bearing housing ring with a shorter one to remove the space and play.

From experience, we know certain car models are susceptible to the vanos rattle while others don’t usually receive it.

Models susceptible to receiving the vanos rattle:
All E36 and E34 models
E46 323i and 330i. The 323i usually receives the rattle at idle and is a slow clunking. The 330i usually gets the rattle around 2k RPM.
E39 520i and 530i
Z3 single and double vanos

Even if a car doesn’t have a vanos rattle it can develop it in the future. This occurs as the helical gears wear and influence the axial play movements resonance.

What is "rattle repair"? How do I know my Vanos seal are bad? INPA does have an option to check VANOS status but I don't know how to read whether it is ok, good or bad.
