hey guys, need to ask some questions about the e36. i was looking at some e36 and i'm a bit confused. i saw breakpopin thread and he says that his 325 is 5 speed auto, then i saw some other threads that the 328 are only 4 speed auto. confused already!!!! i know breakpopin has a transplant which is has a new upgraded engine but how come the 328 have only 4 speed and why breakpopin has 5 speed.another question untill what year the 325 are manufactured. i see that there are a lot of 92 only.thanks for the info first.ed

Some imported E36, 325 or 328 are come with 5 speed auto. As for local assm BMW they are all 4 speed.

Personally, I love the 5 speed as it is smoother and better in quality if maintained properly. They also give better FC.

Take your time.. dont rush.

Ed,

All CKD E36 models get the 4 speed GM tranny ..... including the top of the range 328i too. Perhaps this was AB's way to keeping the price down ... or maximising profit obviously but on the 6 cylinder models, the 4 speed tranny was usually the weak link. The 5 speed tranny either the so-so GMs or excellent ZFs are usually found on most of the CBU models including many down south in SG. I recently drove a 5 speed ZF equipped 1998 328i Coupe (UK spec, me thinks) and the difference between it and my own 328i were very obvious.

Regards,
VaN.

BTW, the E36 325i were made between 1992 upto early 1996. By then, BMW had already released the even better 328i with the more advanced M52 engine. All locals cars are auto but there are a limited number of 325i manuals (Sport Edition) floating around which are the ones to go for. Finding a good example with proper service history and care won't be easy. Good luck in your hunt.

Regards,
VaN.

thanks guys for the info. need to do a lot of research for the car. don't want to get a lemon. is the fuel consumption for the e36 325 and the 328 a big difference and they use different types engines right apart form the 2.5l and 2.8 l

Five-speed auto or manual 'box are the best ones to have.

Its worth the wait for a 328 5-speed, if you settled for less then you'll always be left hankering for a better 3.

Hahaha!

I did discuss on Bi Fuel options (NGV) but kena bomb kao kao! Personally I feel it is a good option as it cost less then RM3000 and in the long run, you can enjoy your ride more..

Now you can install two tanks in your car and that can give you about 300km per fill. Less visit to NGV station

Imagine RM70 of NGV can bring you around for 2000km instead of 300KM on petrol. If engine not powerful enough then get 328 ... roadtax also reduced by 50% hahaha.

I learn that the negative effect of NGV is hotter engine, but many mech adviced to change the termo to 80c and it will be fine

By posting this.. sure kena marah again..

wahhh Geof actually just infront of my house ----- NGV Station !!!!
this is good idea getting 328 and cucuk NGV on it....
how much? 3K not bad
then 50% roadtax reduced!!

wahhh geof I never fikir like this!!.
good idea.
I found some taxi using both petrol and NGV... is it roadtax still reduced?

Thanks
good idea

long live NGV

there are 3 types of NGV conversion kit in the market ranging from RM2500-RM8000

1. For carburetor car (Mixer Type)
2. For fuel injection car (Pre-mix Type)
3. For Fuel Injection car (Sequential Type)

both 2 and 3 is suitable for BMW but the 3rd one is so much better because the kit has individual NG injector for individual cylinder instead of mixing NG and air before putting the mixture into the cylinder (system 2).

In that sense, the 3rd option can control the fuel air ratio better than 1 and 2.

NGV advise to have a TAP (Timing Advance Processor) to adjust the timing because NG octane is rated at 120 while gasoline is rated at 97.

The biggest tank for NG is 80 liter which can only be fitted in vans instead of any bmw here. If you get a 60 liter you will get to fill around Rm9-12 depends on pump pressure. From that full tank you can get roughly 200km.

In europe, there are LPG vehicle where one full tank can go for more than 500km. LPG vehicle is somewhat illegal here. I dont know what's the reason.

For road tax, only 25% off when you are using NG and gasoline; if you use 100% NG then you are entitle of 50% off on your road tax like those airport limo.

If you guy is interested, you can always visit to the local NGV forum

i'm looking at breakpoping e36 325 92/97 5 speed zf m50 vanos or Babiutan e36 328 ckd 95' . which do u think is a better buy. breakpopin car is 2.5l vanos but older but babi's one is newer but higher capacity and 4 speed only. so i'm a bit torn.

Suggest you have both car on detail check.. If uncareful you will end up like paying a lot $$$$$$$ may it be 325 or 328 , 4 or 5 speed.

Be extra careful and check and check again.

Good luck.

Personally, both 4 or 5 speed are good if they are well taken care of.. If it has being raced then.. whatever gear also will rosak..

Personally I love the 4 speed wz 328 as I love the rush from the kick down compare to 325's effect.

Get a post 97 328i with Full Service History and be sure you get the car inspected by a "trusted" mechanic.

It can be quite difficult to get a 5 speed., so if u come across a good 4 speed just grab it.

Fuel Consumption would be similar for the 325 & 328. The 328 is a newer car. Facelifted in 97.

Thats what I would do if I could turn back the clock. Of course hindsight is always 20:20.

Cheers
