There are 2 variants of the E46 320i. Early batch 2001 and pre 2001 came with the M52TU 2.0 6 pot engine (double vanos) rated at ~150hp. When the M54's were released for the E46 range the E46 320i got the 2.2 ltr M54 with 170hp which was a nice healthy power and torque boost over the M52TU 2.0 6 pot unit.
The Valvy 2.0 4 banger has double vanos on the E46 was rated at 143hp if I remember right. The same unit in the E90 320i has been tuned to deliver 150hp instead now, matching the older 6 pot M52 E46 320i.
thanks for the explaination , clear my doubts ....Originally posted by E46Fanatic@Apr 28 2006, 08:58 AM

just test drove a 2001 unreg 320i 6 potter....very smooth...Originally posted by wglee@Apr 29 2006, 11:47 AM
If you ask me, I'll go for the E46 320i whether in 2.0 litre (6 cylinders, 150bhp) or 2.2 litre (6 cylinders, 170bhp) guise instead of the E46 318i 1.9 (non-Valvetronic, 4 cylinders, 118bhp) or the E46 318i 2.0 (Valvetronic, 4 cylinders, 143bhp) because the 4 potters (despite using balancer shafts) can never match the 6 potters for smoothness, refinement and character.
For many years and still continuing, BMW is renowned for their 6 cylinder engines. No offence whatsoever meant to 4 potter BMW owners out there, but I recall it wasn't that long ago when the adage was that a BMW is not a true BMW if it doesn't have at least 6 cylinders.
