Hi Guys,Wanted to purchase a 318Ci E46 for my son and found one yesterday. It's a year 2000 with 1.9 engine. I check with a couple ofr friends and they told me that this type engine has got problems. The car looks quite good to me body wise but have not test driven it yet.My other son is using a 318i E46 for the last few month but it does not seem under powered and does not give me any problem. does these 2 models use the same type of engines?Any comments guys. Thanks

I buy but his money la.........

BMW M43 1.9 is a solid engine much more trouble free than the later N42/46 2.0. Go for it!!!

My father's friend has a 2003 318i(four door) with the same engine as your son's car. It's got a bit over 100,000kms now.No problem whatsoever on the engine.

Also, my lawyer friend has a 2002 318i with around 120,000kms.She never reported any problem on the engine.

If those two testaments above is anything to go by, then I say its a pretty reliable engine.

that is what i hear and feel as well coz i am also driving E46 M43 1.9L, might be underpower abit, but engine is reliable. or like what manan21 mention, if you can invest slightly more, go for 325i, no complaint on power wise and engine roar

Thanks

Thanks guys for the feedback. This is the car that I am talking about... was listed in motortrader best price RM91.5K... dont know if its reasonable.

Another thing you might want to check is the condition of all the rubber gasket. Those ci's rubber gasket doesn't come cheap.

One more thing I want to add is if you think the M43 is under power you can always change to the M42 twin cam engine. Even though the M42 is an older engine but it is a very strong engine with forged internals. Very very nice

Don't worry

alooo bro..just to syer with u....

i baru pakai E46 1.9 model...recond germany.......but for me serius 1.9 better compare E46 2.0......easier to mantain!!!
If u compare power i think different c.c a bit....
i bought 85k only...
for me simple....Malaysia la bro...mana mau speed sangat..my one 200kmj dah boleh...no harm!!!!

Thanks for all the info guys. Have paid a depoist for one already. will be joining the UDMowners for thier TT tomorrow nights.

hey brown guy 43,

Welcome to the club. the CI in the picture looks good. it is better if you go for it.

i own a 320Ci , a 2.2 , 6 cyl engine... and i have driven a 2003 valvetronic 2.0 E46 and honestly speaking, the power is quite similar...

but the 2.0 is cheaper to maintain in case of engine oil and fuel consumption.

Plus u get a 600 ++ rebate everyyear hehehehe....

so go for it.

all i can say is that i've made a good decision in buying my car below:
