Sifus, I am thinking of changing my orriginal 16" rims to 17". Any suggestions that will make my UDM looks cool.By the way, how much is the Michelin Pilot Sport II for the 17" and any suggestion of good shops around? Your advice is much appreciated. Cheers.

Dear sis,

First of all your UDM already looks cool. If I were you I would keep my original 16 inch rim. If the current wheels are giving problems (i.e badly dented, derormed) I would change back to the original size (16 inch) perhaps defferent design. You can't go wrong with original rims when it comes to ride comfort and performance. You enjoy the best of both worlds. They are well balanced. Once you change to 17 inch rims you are disturbing the 'state of equilibrium'. Your wheels are getting slightly bigger and you are riding a little bit higher. The result - the ride is getting bouncy. The car dives when you apply brakes. The only solution is to invest in sports suspension to lower it and also to make it more stable. Now, you are sacrificing comfort but your handling is excellent. You can take corners at a higher speeds. The stance looks better too. Having said that, what is the big problem? The problem is that the E46 comes with aluminium suspension and lower arm. Because of its lightweight in nature it is very sensitive to changes in centrifugal and centripetal forces. The heavier the rims (wheels) the more harm it will do. The first thing that is going to suffer is the bushings. Then, the problem will just continue from there. BMW answer to this is that if you want a nice looking car with big wheels and lower suspension, invest in M Sport model. There will be no problems in the future. Remember, BMW invested a lot when it comes to research and development. They didn't come up with 16 inch wheels for your car in just overnight. It was after a series of rigorous testings. The material they use for the rims is also not the same as the aftermarket rims. So, remember this also.

P/S: My approach to your question might be a bit conservative but just think about it.

Brgds/

sis, upgrade 18' coz from ori. 16' to 17' cant see much difference (pointless upgrade) my personal opinion. 1 inch is nothin, 2 inch is good and 3 inch is abit out :D

The only 17" i see good is BMW Type 44. Otherwise, get 18" as mouse said...

Then, u upgrade your stock suspension to sport MTECH suspension..swee swee...

I'm currently on that setup and so far no issue..camber, and toe all swee swee...

Firstly, thank you Funter Fahrer for the kind advice. Very-vey informative indeed and as a matter of fact, very true. BMW don't fix 16" wheels to save cost obviously, it's the best configuration for the overall design of the particular model hence I should re-think if I wish to outsmart the brains of BMW specialists. Bad move!!

Mine comes with wheels rather similar to the type 44 as posted in this thread by Ade and although mine looks a tini-whiny bit smaller than I would assume perfection, it's still a satisfying sight to see everyday. To me, safety is the priority and follow on by comfort and the thought of sacrificing that for the sole purpose of size...I'm not sure if that is indeed the best idea afterall.

Anyway, thanks to all for the useful tips. That's why I enjoy this forum and never regretted being a member from the day I bought my UDM.

Cheers to all.

BMW not only design 16"...but they do design 18" to be fitted to the car as well...this is part of their sport package offering..so...fear not...

I beg to differ....16" rims on BMW is a cost saving rim.

Their real rims are 17" - comes on sports and mtech packages

18" is probably the best but only if you have the right suspension to go with it - why else would they put 18 inch rims on the M3 if it wasn't the best?

19" is a little over kill - that's why I like it the best!

I am quite happy with my 17in type 68M
Came with the first batch of M3's

staggered setup with 225 fr and 245 rear.

Not as sweeeeet as 18's but a helluva lot cheaper and probably more comfy

hmn.... mine running on 18 inch, original radial design. 225 front and 255 rear. dont know about you guys, but 18 inch is really common over here in Uk. most coupe come with the MV design, i am sure this is feasible as some people just opted with the 18inch wheels without upgrading the sport suspension when ordering their new car.

if it was what mentioned above, bmw salesperson shouldnt be advinsing against such move?

Budget???

Changing to bigger rim looks cool but there is the consequenses (spell right ka?) of having it!

1. Bigger rim have a different wear and drag... to the tyres so in layman terms.. 1st thing you will sacrifice you top speed mayb around 5-10% if with standard engine.

2. Expose to your joint rubber (can't remember the parts name) to koyak... lucky mine is under warranty last time... cost you around RM400++ huh

3. Positive side ... bole tayang maaa... and more stable while cornering sikit la...(if you still dont change the shocks and coil spring... )... still 4 jari dengan fender...huahuahua anak kucing bole tidor atas tayar ma.... huahuahua RACCCCUUUNNNNNN

4. It will affect your chamber.... definately...with bigger rims.... can't run away from that... thats y they put a stock rim 16"...german calculated oledi loorrrrr but coz of MALAYSIA BULEH...hehehhe so i got it done...

Thats ALL...mayb some other sifus nak tambah...
