Hi, all sifus, I know a lot have been said about wheel bearing and its symtoms. Mine is this. I heard some humming sound coming from the rear wheel only within a certain speed range, from 40 to 60kph. Beyond that range, the sound would not appear. My mechanic diagnosed it as a wheel bearing prob. Need some advice and input before I hospitalise the car to change the wheel bearing. I thought wheel bearing problem would be there regardless of the speed of your car. Could this be some other prob like balancing?

I have the same problem before but my humming sound only comes out when I go above 150. Had the wheel bearing replace and sound gone.

Another way to determine if it's the wheel bearing is to lift your car and spin the effected wheel. If there is a humming sound, then it's the wheel bearing. Just base on my experience and what I mech showed me.

Crymson, I'm agreed with you. I've faced this kind of problem previously, which is humming sound came out whenever speed hit above than 150. I had changed the bearing on my left wheel and if I'm not mistaken, its costly about rm250.

So looks like my tell tale sign is rather different from yours. For mine, the sound only came on within certain range of speed. Have read somewhere about jacking up the car and rocking/shaking the wheel by holding it at the top and lower part to determine whether the bearing is OK. Will try that out before reverting again. So far the humming sound is very minimal and very bearable :) You basically have to strain your ear to notice it.

go to change the bearing.. yes small noice at certain speed. but dont let it be worst.. the simple step to check your bearing just kick your tyre when your car at parking mode. if u heard some unusally sound when you kick ur tyre.. yes that was it.. form my experience.. last month spend 1k to settle this, bearing hancur.. nucker also changed..

My mech told me costs would be about RM300 inclusive of labour per bearing. One full day's job. Need special tool to pump the rod out, phew. Real pain in the ass.

Grand, i changed my rear left wheel bearing on May, cost me RM140 (bought from ES). Just for your reference, my mechanic take time 2 hours to settle, not a difficult job for whole day..

Some rough sound when i rotated my tyre, so decided to changed it since mechanic said it is dangerous on high speed.

Yep, highly likely a bearing problem.
If tyre problem, inspect the tyre and see if there are side buldging, excessive wear, cuts etc .... I don't think so.
Older car bearing is cheap and easy to install. My current ride (not a BMW) have had both rear bearing changed under warranty. They told me it cost more than RM1K each. These come complete with the hub and ABS sensors.

Jack up up yr car....spin the wheel and feel the spring/coil. If the vibration is great then definitely it is the bearing! If not rotate your tyres and see if the humming sound is still there. Good Luck!

H BMW7833, thanks for the info. Can you PM me your mechanic's contact number and location :top:

Wa, I'm based at PJ. By the time I reach JB, the bearing could have died on me :D Thanks anyway. WIth that information, I would hunt for a mechanic who could attend to my car more diligently.

Just to digress, I observe most of the mechanics would ask the owners to leave their cars behind as there are so much works to be done and bla, bla, bla. But as soon as you leave their workshop, they would attend to other cars and only start to repair your car just before the appointed time for you to collect the car.
