hey, mine runs at 3 bars when normal operating temperature and not 2 bars...seriously

Btw, i had changed to a stronger fan (600W) cos mine is a UK spec model which came with a 400W fan. I asked Bavarian Auto and they supplied me with the 600W engine fan and thermostat as used on local spec models. The 600W fan is noisier and has more blades than my earlier fan. I wonder if my "tropicalising" my car has something to do with it, must be so i guess.

thanx desbimmer for your precious info。 Soaccording to your experience when is the right time we need to stop the vehicle to let it cool down before the indicator blink sounds up。Is it when it reach only 1 line?Says if i"m going to genting。

Guys, I think those lines on the tachometer indicates oil temperature, not coolant temp.

It's much like the lit orange/red lights on the M3/M5's tachometer that lights up in amber when you start the engine, and gradually disappears as the engine heats to operating temperature. It is there to tell you it's safe to rev the engine to whatever point the indicators are showing.

That's what my mechanic told me when i posed him the same question. Make sense

izzit!??! gee. all i know is that the lines were not visible when my car had the 'check coolant' message come out and my mech did not say anything about the car lacking in oil. I just placed it together when my car came out of the workshop and I saw the lines again after and since. The rev thinghi makes sense too tho :)
Am just going to drive and not bother about anything then :) ekekeke.....

regardless, if it is an oil temperature gauge, if oil temperature is high, then that means engine is overheating right?

In a way, yes. Though oil being more viscous, responds much more slowly to temperature changes. As such, the indication will never be accurate. If it was, all cars would just have an engine oil temp meter instead of a water temp meter ;)

This is what I can see from my car. If you can see, the red line doesn't move, it remains like that when cool or hot... puzzling me a bit. Any comment

The red bar is your engine's redline. All engines have this marking to denote the maximum rpm's that the engine can endure.
The engine over-rev cut-out normally limits rpm's to this point.
This marking has no relation whatsoever to engine temperature.

I check mine, which the dot is near to figure 6 before engine start, after driving for 20min and found the dot remain only 2 bar, is it too hot?

After running for few hours. Mine doesn't move at all. How come

Mine is exactly the same too. I get 3 white lines when I start my engine and after hours it's still the same, lol :) I guess we are on LCI and perhaps it's different?

I really wouldn't worry about these indicators. If your engine is running hot, the iDrive display will inform you.

Thanks bro and I agree :) I was just trying out what some members here pointed but apparently mine isn't working like theirs, haha. Normally as a precaution, I don't rev the engine too much on a cold start and only do so after 5-10 mins of driving.

Hi bro,
Put your car rest for whole night, morning time before start the engine, the dot will stay at around figure 6 rpm, after engine start and drive a while, the dot will move out remain 2 bars. After using your car for sometimes and you off it, the bar will still remain same as 2 bars, due to the engine oil still hot. So you will not see the dot bar is moving...

It's not working. The bar is always 3 lines irregardless what I do. I believe the newer E60 behaves differently

Yeap. Agree with you bro. Doesn't have any changes to the bar whether you moving or not.
