There's no water temp gauge on the E60. The water temp can however be displayed on the iDrive monitor if the function is called up.

That will be dangerous, when the warning light pop up at the idrive then every things will be too late, the engine maybe already over heating. At least there is a digital gauge to monitor the temp. going up.

I think the i-drive will warn us if the water temp is too high. Normally in the morning when we start the car up, I will check the water temp and make sure it's warm enough before I start hitting the rpm's but on the E60 LCI, I can't find it either.

on one of my previous cars, a Toyota Wish didn't have a water temp gauge, so i bought one aftermarket gauge (autogauge from Kakimoto Sunway) & adaptor for the sensor and put the gauge on my dash at the far right corner...worked well but that was a Jap car...

been contemplating to do the same on my E60, hehe, but have not got round to it...

Found this on the US BMW Car club site:

You can constantly monitor engine temp using the 'hidden' on board computer.

Switch on ignition ... (don't start the engine) ... set trip oddometer to zero and release.
Press trip oddometer button again and keep finger pressed on it.

After a good few seconds, you'll see a warning triangle ... keep button pressed in.
You'll then get in to service menu ... keep button pressed in.

You'll then move on to hidden menu. Now take your finger off the trip button.
Scroll through the 'hidden' menus to position 19 ... yes, you will need to press the button 19 times to get there.

At 19 ... it will come up with 'Locks on' then 'Code 00'
This is where you now 'unlock' the hidden menus. At this point you will need to press a set number of times and it scrolls through each time you press ...

code 01
code 02
code 03
etc,etc

The set number of times is found by adding up the last 7 digits of your VIN chassis number ... e.g. if it ends in say, ----5012434 .. then add up 5+0+1+2+2+3+4 =

17. You would need to press 17 times till 'code 17' comes up. You will then see 'locks off' appear.

It will then go back to hidden menu 1 itself.

You will then need to scroll through again to menu 7. after a second or two you will then see the engine temp displayed in Deg. C.

Hope this helps.

Waa it is so complicated, will it display the reading forever or just a few second only?

How to call up the water temp menu?

Wah.... Very interesting. Is there a way where we can check it next time by pressing on the odo meter.

Yup. That's our indication la. Usual temp is 2 white lines if not mistaken. So, if your car got cooling (or heating) issues, the white line will slowly disappear indicating for you to drive quickly to your mech or rest stop.

When car is cool on 1st startup, you will notice lots of white lines and it will gradually thin out after the car warms up.

Is that true Desbimmer. All this while i have been cursing BMW for not having the gauge and little i know that these white lines indicating the temperature . So much to learn man .. tqvm guys.

Here's the pic. The white line should go to 2 bars when the car is properly run in :)

Thanks very much guys, this info is so helpful. I just checked my car and confirmed what u said.

However, i have to say that the those lines are by the tachometer and not odometer.

Also, i would like to suggest that this thread be a sticky so that it won't be pushed back too far. It's good reference for all concerned.

I check mine, which the dot is near to figure 6 before engine start, after driving for 20min and found the dot remain only 2 bar, is it too hot?

thanx desbimmer for your precious info。 Soaccording to your experience when is the right time we need to stop the vehicle to let it cool down before the indicator blink sounds up。Is it when it reach only 1 line?Says if i"m going to genting。
