I seem to be checking the water level everyday now coz the water level in the radiator side tank is always well below the min level. but when I open the vent plug at the side of the tank the water seem to rise back up to the min level. I do have to top up water every week. I have check for leakege and the engine seem to be running ok, no overheating as yet. What could be the problem.....have anybody had the same experience?

Have you tried bleeding the system to get rid of excess air in your engine's cooling system?

Not 100% sure it's the root cause of the problem but maybe if you tried that it might help.

you have a leak somewhere. Get it check ASAP. When the rubber hose break, your engine will overheat without much warning.

thanks for the input. I did, a few times but still the problem persist. all rubber hoses are new and there is actually no signs of leakage. i have already send to the mechs for checks. I only hope that its not the cyclinder head cracking again..... but the symptoms does not signal that (got a bit of experience on crack cyclinder heads :)......

Shazani, when you say vent plug do you mean the radiator cap or the bleed screw? I'm assuming radiator same with E34.

If it is the bleed screw then the reason the water rises is that the water from the radiator is flowing back to the side tank. Which means that water has been lost somewhere in the system and that's why its been taken from the side tank.

Try this, fill the side tank until it reaches the mark. Close the radiator cap. Open the bleed screw and fill water through the bleed screw until it is full. Close the bleed screw. Drive around a bit, let the engine cool off and open the bleed screw and top up if required. If you really paranoid then squeeze the lower radiator hose while pouring water constantly in the bleed screw. Repeat with the upper radiator hose. This is to get rid of any air bubbles remaining in the system.

If you do this then all you need to do is to check and fill up the side tank. If you still losing water then definitely there's a leak somewhere. Have you removed and blocked off the hoses leading to the heater? Water pump may be leaking slightly.

Hope this helps. If E36 different, my apologies, just informing what works with my 34. :top:
