Water in battery area

The other day, my battery died. On opening up the battery area I found water (around 4 inches!).

So my question is how it is getting in. I suspect is through the lights because I found that side is rather loose compared with the other side. So how do I solve this problem? Is it possible to DIY by remove lights and re-install?

You have to try to trace the source of the leak. also you need to check if the water run off hole is not blocked

Bro crusher,most likely your taillights rubber seal.Try the garden water hose to confirm and reseal if true.
Bro slyder,I donno about the e46 but the e60 does not have a water runoff hole.But there are holes which are plugged up with removable rubber bungs.
