Am looking to buy a pair (thinking of the Motorolas that I saw at our Lil' 3'ers drive to Bentong). Was wondering if anyone here can recommend a suitable model or specs I should keep an eye out for?TQ

Ok so I went to Low Yat and took a look around. Found these:

1. HYT TC-368S for RM700 per unit
- 5km range, UHF

2. Kenwood TK-1118 for RM499/pair
- 5km range, UHF (450-470MHz) , handsfree
- apparently this model is popular with the Low Yat plaza workers, saw many of them using this.

3. Motorola T5720 for RM250/pair
- claimed 5miles range (sales guy said about 3km in real life use), FRS/GMRS

4. Motorola SX700R for RM490/pair
- claimed 12 miles range (sales guy: 3km in real life use), FRS/GMRS

Anyone have any comment on these units? I will do some net research later.

Also, on the official club drives, which models are commonly used? I would like a set that I can bring on the drives and be used together with the models used on club drives.

ehoe: Thanks for the offer, I will keep them in mind, but would like to hear about compatibility with the club drive walkies before I decide.

In my opinion the Motorola talkabouts are the ones most commonly used..so to be compatible with the majority i think the Motorolas would be the best...unless u get the more expensive ones than can search channels..,

I have those as well as Cobra's. Bought at Radio Shack many years ago.

If you have the $$ suggest you get the UHF talkies, they have much longer coverage areas but I doubt if they will work with the Motorola talkies since its on different frequencies. The talkies that are used by most forummers are categories as Recreational Walkie Talkie under the FRS/GMRS category. And its true, never believe the distance rating for most FRS/GMRS talkies, generally cut about 50 - 60% off the published rated distance. For example a 5 mile talkie, expect maybe 2 - 3 miles at most in day to day environments.

As for my Midland talkies they are under the FRS/GMRS type so guarantee to be compatible with the Motorola, Cobra, Uniden, etc. Infact I have a set of Motorola and I can show you that they work with the Midlands if you need proof. :)

Well happy hunting for the talkies....

u can bargain your T5720 for RM 200 coz i did that in LowYat, but u have to ask 1 by 1 who can offer u that price. but beware coz its not original motorola with no manufacturer warantty, they warranty u by themself. most common problem with this talkabout is their battery lifespan and speaker. its really cheap (but have to risk on quality), but hopefully u will get a good condition unit
