Top Overhaul e34 need advice

Hi, Need some advice, reading through the other threads it my car is showing symptoms of a leaky gasket hence requiring a top overhaul. My mech is quoting me RM 3K for the job, which includes replacing gasket and polishing. Looking at the prices of those of you who have done it that range between RM

Thanks Lionel, typically what is included in a top overhaul and what is included in a full overhaul if it is not too much trouble to ask.

I just serviced my E34 at BM World last friday. May have to do a top overhaul. Mech quote me about RM400 for just a clean up job, and up to RM1k plus if i have to replace the top.. but note, my E34 is a M20B25 engine. Dunno about the M50...

Price includes the whole job + labour ?

3k for a top overhaul would be on the high side. I have seen BM World doing a few top overhauls, usually the bill inclusive of everything will be in the region of 2k.

cos we dunno the mileage of Keray's car and the condition of his engine.

parts like the torx headbolt,gasket set,the seals,then the timing chain tensioner, will cost almost to 1k( as in original) sets. Thats why I ask him to insist on original parts,Who knows he might need to change the water pump, warped cams,the the hoses,the ancillaries parts, the coolant sensors for water and engine, shaves part of the cylinder head???....you guys shud know better then me.

well....its only my dua duit..

Actually I would say most of the parts are fine except that some air is leaking from the gasket into the water cooling system causing some pressure build up there.

The mech should know since he had already changed most of the cooling system parts over the last 2 years.

From what I gather he told me:
Gasket , top set (no idea what that consists of), polishing of engine, valve seals and polishing the valves. The kicker 1.2K for LABOUR !!

Hmmm, did the same thing to my engine last year. Was only charged RM800 for labour then.

You are talking about rebuilding a whole engine.

For top overhaul, the few items you mentioned is more than sufficient. Cylinder head screws (RM150), Head gasket set with valve cover gaskets, exhaust manifold gasket and etc (about 300). Timing chain tensioner not needed la, its easy to change when its faulty (RM120). A lot less than the 1k you mentioned.

If the cams are warped, chances are his car would be misfiring by now. If there is no overheating, no need to shave and pressure test the cylinder head as well. Like he said, the bummer is the labour cost!
