hi guys,my car's normal temp is not more 2 bars. but sometimes while idle in heavy traffic, the temp will slowly rise, it went up to 3 bars. when the traffic start to move, temp will slowly go back down. is this normal?

it is a symptom of your thermostat, waterpump kaput or leakage.....better check with any reputable mech.

tq

i already check the water level, and its fine. will go and have it check tomorrow thanks :)

what model e30 you have?

if after you move the temp go down to normal,yr radiator fan is not spinning fast enuff to cool yr radiator in traffic.chk yr viscous coupled fan...

Depending on which thermostat I used, my M40 would hold steady at either the quarter or the half mark. It might creep maybe 1mm to the right in hot conditions, but nothing more.

bro....no it is not normal.i have been driving BMWs since 1996 starting with an e28 and any temps at the 3/4 mark is telling you something is not right.our temps shud always be in he middle mark.

if hi temp at idle --> fan not giving sufficient cooling
if hi temp at speed--> radiator not cooling sufficiently due blockage etc

in all cases...get it checked.i get jittery anytime the temp needle creeps above the middle mark...

Yes same with me even though my 1st time driving a bmw...
I'm a technical guy so any decimal diff in the cluster meter it will triggered my hearts...

So the best thing is to get totally check up...
Like mine now is still monitoring for any leaking of the coolant...
Even after doing pressure test could not found any leakage...
But the coolant level some times will drop by 1 tea cup...(2-3days)
My temp gauge is at the middle and OBC range around 85c-92c...

My problem with same symptom was a faulty bleeder screw change the screw problem solved

any trace of coolant there bro...
Normally any leaking can see trace of coolant there...
Good to hear bro solved the prob...

thanks a lot for the responds.

my car never reach 3/4 from the temp gauge. highest it gets is half(3 bars) from the gauge... if im not mistaken it is still a normal operating temp right? or is it my car is running on too cold (average below two bars temp)...? sorry i really dont know this kinda stuff.

anyway i will have it checked, thanks again man. i have long distance drive end of this month, need to service my car.., so..

So did solved your prob bro...

arghh i thought the blue bar on the temp gauge is consider 1 bar... turns out it isnt.. patut la confuse hahaha. sorry guys.

so the real situation here is that my car never reach more than 1 bar at normal temperature ( i dont know whether this is normal for an E30 M40). means it hardly reach half the temp gauge. only when i stuck in traffic, temp starts to rise slowly to 2 bars.

hehehehe sorry again guys, im such a noob :p

volvo,
i didnt get the time to see my mech yet.. :(

Oh ok then...
Is it possible snap some pics of the gauge after the temp rises...

i see, so its normal then. thanks man ^_^

As the other forumers have mentioned, it's not normal. I was referring to a very slight movement to the right. If it gets anywhere past middle and moving towards the 3/4 mark, then you need to get it checked out.
