Japanese engine are known for its reliability and safetySEBERANG JAYA: A man was seriously injured early Friday when the engine of his Nissal X-Trail SUV exploded as he turned its ignition key.The victim, identified as Lee Chong Beng, 58, suffered 70% burns in the 8.40am incident. His head was in flames when he was pulled out by neighbours from the vehicle parked outside his house in Taman Sembilang, near here. The SUV exploded again twice after he was pulled out of it.Lee was sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital, where he is said to be under critical care.Initial investigations indicated that the engine could have been faulty.

how can an engine explode???? Burst into flame, maybe, but explode? I'm curious to know how that happen..

..by all means, there is nothing what could cause engine to explode in such manner...we are talking about chamber, if I remember correctly, can sustain easy, about 350 psi on a normally aspirated engine and a compression ratio of around 10:1, this figure will vary with the compression ratio which is determined by the design of the engine which is in turn a static specification...having said that, amount of injected fuel in such high pressure environment CANT be large, and that means that explosion itself cant occure anywhere but inside that chamber we call cylinder..soon as it is exposed to atmosphere..its all gone..no fire brother..so, this looks like some sort of 'setup' to me, rather than engine explosion (what is a plain joke to believe in)..

It may just be a 'media exaggeration'! It could have just been a 'burst' of flames...

Hell, my M50 explodes (backfires) when the ICV hose disconnects. Just happened this morning.

I guess it's part of a larger plot to 'finish' him off...

...or I might have to look at my X-Trail closely from now on.

Aha....a good time for our Myth busters friends to come in!......frankly, I doubt a standard car can go up like that, unless it was rigged with a bomb. If he had a NGV tank....it would go up in the rear but that's also not easy. Let's shee if we h

Daymm.. just read it in the papers. the driver suffered 60% body burnt and witness said he walked out with hair still on fire. gosh!

..this is how 'engine explosion' may look like, typically due mechanical failure (in this case blower/block head was not fixed properly)..but soon as combustion chamber was open to atmosphere it all just..poooof..so no way to cause such explosion/fire on X-trail, IF car was using normal fuel..It may be some sort of explosion in case car had modified to run on natural gas..that may cause explosion during ignition stage or just engine startup, but then, its not engine but gas lines/tank explosion..its all kind a weird..

..'engine explosion'..

There's speculation that it could have been the maintenance free battery exploded subsequently causing the fire from ruptured fuel line...
