s/c for non-M is usually bolt on...for M3 because the compression ratio is so high they have to physically change parts of the M3 engine to lower the compression so that you can supercharge it safely without blowing the engine.

Most common thing is to change the entire intake manifold. The R&D involved with making a new one that works with the s/c is probably what makes the price so high, along with the countless hours it took to first tune software for the engine.

I just checked AA-Tuning's website and the s/c for M3 is now only about US$10k...when it first came out it was over $20k.
