Something for sharing,

In my opinion, RFT or Spare Tyre issue is a double sided edge sword. After my experience on tyre punture during my trip to Kulim, below is my direction and sharing.

It was 3 am in the morning where i am travelling with another 2 OM heading to Sg. Buloh R & R to meet up with the rest of the commitee. I receive a "Tyre Punture" prompt on my I drive. I immidiately stop my car and check, however there is nothing wrong about it and all is in good condition. I continue my journey (130~160km/h), suddenly the entire car shoke vigouriously, i pull to the road side and my cold sweat coming.

I got down and check, indeed my back right tyre flaten out. I do have a spare tyre 17 inch / 20 if i am not mistaken however my current rim is 18 Inch c/w 264/35. at first i taught of changing it however i am very concern which this size would indirectly giving preassure to the shaft on the disc break where min at least 40% of the total car weight is sitting on it. WHY i never taught of it before ?? i worry i resolve one matter and create additional in other hand.

Suddenly heavy rain and i am at the road side and the another 2 OM waving light to alert the lorries and high speed car. I was quite despair at that moment and i saw a highway patrol car stop by and the guy come towards me and help me to patch the tyre and pump back the air. Yes!! everything back to normal however another 80KM the tyre punture again as the same patch smere as i suspect it is due to the wet ground. Finally i stop at seremban, pump in more air to sustain my self to reach Sri Petaling to buy a new tyre....bla bla long story...but finally i reach kulim.

Lesson learnt:

1- Spent a bit more $$ to avoid the risk of accident while you change ur tyre beside the road, car skid due to tyre punture and others risk you could think of related to tyre punture.

2- If you got spare tyre, so what ?? if the car is driven by ur wife or even your self, pumping up the jack is difficult (E60) as the car is near to 2 Ton exclude the extra load. Try it ur self, ur wife or try both cooperate to do it first.Bro, u r driving a BMW and you should not compare it with others car. E60 is heavy.....

3- Try to imaging, u r in my shoe in the middle of the morning come with high speed lorries, car , bike, sleepy drivers and etc. How much is the tyre ? compare ur life and family ? If u r lucky, it happen in town, if bad.....highway or the old road to Kuantan or Karak ....ponder about it.

4- Spare tyre or RFT ? i would go for RFT by starting next year as a patch tyre cannot sustain in high speed, quality & performance. Spent a bit more to avoid a life threating risk towards my self and my wife, why not ? if you can afford a BMW, the 4 tyre, why not ? at least can sustain in low speed till to a safety location for further remedy.

Spare tyre conversion kit vs RFT.....

I'm using 245/40 R18 for my back tyre.......my spare is R17/20 (original E60 spare tyre).....is my spare tyre suitable to use if my back tyre flat?

What I suggest is to use a better performance tire which normally comes with reinforced side wall that withstand puncture. May I know what brand of true you use? I have been using Dunlop Sport Maxx for a year and everything is well :top: the most worrying message I got was "tire pressure loss". This means either I forgot to constantly pump air into my tire, or my tire kena paku or other sharp objects. Most of the time it was the latter :4:

My wife won't be driving my E60 - I wouldn't let her drive anyway, not for long distance. And believe me when I said that I did change the tire twice before. The jack that comes together with the spare tire is not that hard to use really. As a matter of fact, it's time consuming (the only drawback). How long you didn't change your tire bro?

The spare tire is really handy IMO. Yes it's only 17" compared to my 18" rim with 245/40/18.. But bear in mind the word "spare", meaning that it's for use in case of emergency! Change it and drive to the nearest tire shop. You said that you noticed that the patch was smeared again after 80km into the journey so you knew that it was dangerous to continue driving. It's a wonder that you drove all the way after that and then stopped at seremban to pump more air and finally changed your tire at Sri petaling. I would have made detour into seremban town to change tire and if for spare time, enjoy siu hai (grilled crab) or famous Siew pao before heading home :4:

By the way, I'm from Pahang and it's not really THAT dangerous even if your car had puncture along the karak - Kuantan old trunk road. I have been using this road since I got my license at tender age of 17. Even with the east coast highway right now, I still prefer to use the trunk road to maximize the potential of my E60 and to do some spirited driving. On the highway, it's too boring to drive..

For me I have chosen to use conventional tire and I do not (read - Do NOT) have any regret changing it since day 1 of getting my E60 :top: I am well prepared for any consequences. On the other note, maybe I'm one lucky bastard too :4:

Thule.....thank you very much and highly appreciated.....my previous tyre is dunlop digi.......now im using falken.....

haha i am facing this problem too, RFT is so expensive.... But tyre shop usually wont sell you 1 pc. They will sell 4 rims altogether. maybe we can buy together :D

Old thread...yeah but how many of us have the complete spare tyre kit and how many have the puncture repair kit and how many have nothing at all........
