I'm planning to change my coil springs back to ori Mtech springs, currently running aftermarket Jamex springs, too low for the huge speed humps on this island (JKR here must have a department specialising in building speed humps, I call them "humping" department, heh heh... :) ). Okay, I digressed, back to topic... I have read both the Haynes and Bentley service manuals (for E36) thoroughly on removing and reinstalling both the front and rear springs. Apparently there are plenty of nuts and bolts related to the mounting of the struts and anti-roll bars that must ALWAYS be changed whenever they have been loosened. I believe these are self-locking nuts/bolts, and they can only be used once per the specs given by BMW. So, my question is: does anyone out there ever re-use those nuts and bolts? I feel like gonna stand there and make sure that they really change those nuts/bolts that have been specified for single usage.

B...b...bump! So, does anyone know about the existence of these single usage self-locking nuts and bolts for struts, anti-roll bar, etc, mounts? Would like to know whether the mechanics here practise changing these "disposable" thingy everytime they unmount and re-mount suspension parts... Or, they "sayang" the nuts so much till they won't throw any away, and re-use them on unsuspecting customers. I sure wouldn't want any suspension mount failure at a couple of hundred km/h...

Those one-time nuts exists and I recall studying about it during high schools industrial class lesson. One of them is used on the E34 steering, called the steering lock nut which I recently replaced. The result of a loosen nut, oil leaks. Or worst still you don't want your struts to break lose...

I would say you insist on the mechanic to replace them on the specific ones that you're aware of. The mechanical engineers at the BMW wont to use them if they're redundant as it's not cheap as compare to regular nut. But certainly not burning a hole in the pocket.

Time to brush up my persuasive powers... not very good at that... anyway, have to really insist on watching them work also, they may steal every opportunity to put in "newer" looking used nuts... will see this Sat...

And yes, I recalled those days back in the industrial arts class too, all sorts of nuts, bolts, tools... I remembered taking apart a single cylinder engine, and never bothered putting it back together... maybe some other class had to do it instead.

LCP,

If you afraid those bolts and nuts will come loose then "change", Otherwise inspect the bolt and nut threat or ask your mechanic to check for you.

i had changed my mounting 2 -3 time (can not remember exact number of time ) since i own the car almost 4 year by now. Each time i saw my mecahnics to loosen the bolts and nuts, still need a huge of force to loosen meaning the bolts and nuts still work fine and never have any experince of coming loose after reused.
