Guys + gals,Have been having very slight idling roughness from the car (E36 - 1998 318i). Have just completed a full service [filters(oil, air, fuel)] plugs, ATF, final drive, brakes etc.. Checked gap, ICV, AFM, O2. Mech says, head gasket leaking but I don't believe this. No coolant evaporation, no oil in water and vice versa, no drop in performance when car running, consumption in town at 10-11km/l as usual. The thing is, I noticed sound of air escaping (very short and fast) coming from the left hand side of the car near the adjutser unit whenever I switch off the engine. Happens about 5-6 seconds after switching off the engine. Start car again, idle and switch off and wait for few moments and can hear it again. Sounds like a pop off valve or some sort. Just a blip of air pressure going psssst!.What do you guys (and gals) think? What hoses are in that area that could be the culprit, or is that sound normal??? Could this indicate a leaky/damages/frayed hose???Cheers!

 Mee too hear the soung every time switch off the engine.
but my idling damn cun and smooth. going to verify with mech on next service. meanwhile anyone knows the sound.

air slide valve ?
Air slide valve = ICV??? or adjuster unit. Should the sound I mentioned be there or is it abnormal??

GF,

I might also have the same problem as you... Try every things from AFM, ICV, Spark plug, vaccum hose etc and etc... but could not solve it..

Managed to reduce the roughness when I found one of the wire at the
alternator was loose at the terminals but did not eliminate it completely.

Can you tell me whether the idling roughness changes when the air-con is
off or on... and can you feel some minor vibration on the steering
wheel and also on the door panel.. If you have this kind of symthom,
then I think your problem could be due to engine mounting. I have finally
managed to eliminate the vibration after the engine mountings was replaced..

note... The idling would also increased slightly when you engaged your gearbox
into drive mode....

bro jarance,

1) I have tried to check the hoses as best as I could, so far nothing.

2) Engine and gearbox mount brand new, changed last week with full service.

3) One thing though... I had the oil filter housing done up (leak) and the mech had to get the alternator out, the wire (blue) was seized, so that was cut and later reattached with a piece of longer wire and electrical tape. Could this slight variation (resistance, etc) in the attached piece of wire be causing this. The morons cut the wire when I left the car for 15mins to have lunch!

4) The car feels smoother with aircond on. With ac off, can feel slight vibration on doors and floor panel, very slight but the pulsation is there and i CAN feel it

bro elwine30,

which is the air slide valve? I took the ICV out and cleaned it with carb cleaner. Am thinking of getting the throttle housing cleaned out. What do you think? Could this help?

JUST CHECKING , GODFLESH ARE THE ONE I SAW U IN SHAH ALAM WNEH U VIEW MY CAR ?

OIC... the AC does have an effect on the smoothness..

You can try to adjust the screw at the throttle lever. It will increase the idling speed. BTW, what is your idling speed now? Keep it around 850 rpm...

Yup Vincent. That was me.....

jarance,

By just looking, I would say the car's idling at 750 +/- w/out aircond on. Do you think it's too low, hence the vibration? How do I adjust the throttle screw, would cleaning the throttle housing help?

Yes 4L engine Oil is enuff. Our car 4pot only and 1.8l. oil level between high n low for me is the best. try to put engine treatment not oil treatment. If already diagnose all electronics thing must be the mechanical thing. try to check the mounting. Any way yr problem is engine vibration or unstable idling?

Gurus and old timers, boys and gals.....

Checked the oil level, spot on with 4l oil. Checked all vacuum hoses, all look ok. Cleaned ICV, checked throttle body etc. Consumption good as before idling problem still getting 10-11km/l mixed driving.

But that very slight roughness when idling is still there - seems very rthymic, like intermittent misfire in a cylinder. When engine started from cold, the idle is spot on and sweet but roughens when approaching operating temperature. The adjuster unit is new so don't think that would be the problem. The 3 suspects at the moment...

1) New plugs Bosch F7LDCR. Not gapped, but was told they were ok out of the box, don't know how true. Should they be gapped??

2) Leaky flywheel oil seal - The leak seems to be getting worse, actual oil spots on driveway. Could this be affecting the vacuum system of the engine by allwowing un-metered air through the flywheel seal?? Perhaps enough to cause that slight rthymic vibration???

3) Ignition system (coils, wire etc), but car drives bautifully when accelerating all the way to high speeds, no hessitation, misfires roughness..... Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.....

Cheers!

bro why lar your car so many problem wan ?
whose car did you buy ?

Bro, what to do lah, ori mileage damn low (114k), 1 owner, cun interior, back seat and passenger side hardly sat on and cun ori colour - the best out of the 17 cars i went thru. Just these few things here and ther bothering me. Some ppl say I'm imagining things, that a 7 yr car has to have some problems bla bla bla, but I dont buy that. Maybe I should live with it. or perhaps I am imagining things  Maybe shuld meet u guys for TT and see what u ppl think

bro i think you have service/change your afm lar ,
i think you can check wit ah meng in subang usj mspeed.
where did you go for all the service u did? get second opinion if possible
just my opinion

bro jsen,

meng + john are the ppl I see for all things related to my car. Meng's gonna gap the plugs correctly for me later just in case. The voltage reading from the AFM is slightly on the low side but meng says to live with it. Took it to M1 and Casey says the vib are normal, but I find that hard to believe. Maybe I'm just nuts... or a perfectionist with too much time on my hands

when u tried my car does my car have the same vibration ?
nope. I must say your car was pretty smooth... That's why I think something aint right. Have u changed your AFM or is it the ori unit since the 1st owner?
