Gurus....I just had a punctured runflat yesterday and then went to the closest tyre shop which fixed the problem by plugging the hole. Seems like I drover over a nail.....:eek::eek:However, was thinking whether this puncture will affect anything else in regards to the tyre? Am a little new to the whole runflat tyre arena...

patching RFT's are not a problem, as long as the leak is not on the sidewalls and your tyre is no more than 1.5years old. recommend doing an internal patch (requires unmounting the tyre from the rim) rather than the simpler external patch, to ensure you properly seal the hole.
i had mine done about 6 months ago, no problems since.

Whilst I am told that the internal patch is best, I was also told by the tyre specialist that removing RFT from the rims require highly specialised equipment and skill, and that there is no guarantee that the side wall will not crack in the removal process, rendering hte RFT unusable. Apparently, I am told that, in Germany, these RFTs are manufactured to be replaced once there is a puncture - of course, they don't have as many nails as we have on Malaysian roads. And the tyre sealants, always afraid to use them (though I have a bottle at home), coz their use requires a great amount of care: http://www.mospaw.com/portfolio/FlatFree/diligence.shtml. So far, I have only used normal patching (i.e. the usual from the outside). Don't know what to do with a tyre puncture now that there are a number of views.

Definitely recommended to have a pump at home - I hear of stories of the dangers in pumping at the petrol station - coz usually the pumps are in a deserted corner. I use a simple foot pump, and it works great although the gauge is at best an estimate, and is not accurate at all.

All my cars tires are using nitrogen and every two month i will bring the car to the same tire shop for check up on pressures and general maintanence..if you pump air is not only not accurate but also you got to do it regularly like every 2 weeks.I paid RM20 per car initially and subsequent maintanances are free.Well maintain tires not only save lives but money. My experience shows that you can easily prolong your tires life by at least 25% conservatively..of course you go to tire shop that well equip to handle rfts otherwise you are in for heartbreak.damage rims,etc..

If I'm not mistaken, we can't really use the mobility kit and sealant on RFTs, can we? Also, say if I wanted to have the hole patched from the inside, which specialist tyre shop would you recommend and how much would it cost? I bet it may cost a bit more if we actually send it back to the BMW service center. Also, nitrogen is an interesting concept which I've never heard of. Which shop can you get that done at?

Even though RFTs are more expensive, I reckon that extra number of kiliometers that you can use the car can really make a difference between being mugged, robbed or being home safely. Especially, if the tire punctures on a lonely stretch of road!

got my internal patch done for rm40 at lim tayar - they're OK and did a decent job (cos i was watching them like a hawk), just a bit expensive.
you don't need the mobility kit for rfts (that's why you use them).
long debate on rfts vs non-rfts, so it's really up to you to decide what's your priority and which wheels suit you best. just one more of the intricacies of having a UDM! here's a thread for your reading pleasure, enjoy.

What happened, DJH? Why was it so severe? You mean the tyre tore? Was the damage caused by the puncture or by Q's equipment, or the lack thereof? Sorry to hear of damage to wallet, my friend esp when tyres are not due for change yet.

gt punctured by sharp metal object to the extend I can see the metal thread from tyre dangling out so have to change it. I think the damage was between RM2200 to RM2400. U know la, they charge 6% gov tax.
