My ride - a 1994 325 E36 - gives a slight shudder when the steering wheel is turned to far left. Power steering fluid adequate and not leaking. A mech says the pump may be showing first signs of breaking down, but the car could still run normally unless the sound becomes more pronounced. A used power steering pump (with labour included) is $450. is that reasonable? The airflow meter is repairable and can even be fixed DIY, what about the pump or does it make better sense to change to a new one?

agreed... my mech said its a normal thing ofr the p/s pump to screech or shudder when turned to lock. no point in changing since it'll come back after 2-3 yrs if ur lucky...1 yr ? . use the current pump until it fails la...

as mentione by the others you can keep driving with the existing pump. Just make sure it doesn't leak fluid. Most of the power steering pumps can be serviced. The repair kie will cost like 60-100bux. You can have the pump serviced and fluid changed, therectically will help to prolong the life of your power steering rack too. but need to find someone who can do the job well.

what shudders? the wheels? or the the steering wheel?
can you feel the juddering thru' the car body too?

if you put on large wheels, the tires may scrap the body causing it to judder

when was the last time you change the fluids, as in full flush the old one and replace with new one? over time the fluid may take on moisture, at high pressure within the rack, moisture is compressed so pressure drops, then builds up again, possibly it maybe the cause, but there are other variable to check

absorber mountings, tie rods, ball joints and alignment
