Whenever I open the fuel cap to re-fuel, I can hear hissing sound like escaping gas... the minute I twist the cap, the hissing sound comes on... and I'll press on the cap to ensure controlled release of the gas, just in case petrol starts gushing out or something. After the hissing finish, usually take a second or 2... then I'll open the fuel cap fully and pump petrol as per normal.I didn't have this phenomenon with my E46 318... only started getting this on the E90 325. Wonder if this is normal? And whether it'll have any effect on fuel consumption, which is around 12l/100km, is that within the normal range for a 325? My 318 used to be around 11l/100km.

Absolutely normal and no it doesn't have anything to do with your fuel mileage.

no issue bro..its comment.
It caused by the heat and I was informed by few people that this happened when u pump ur petrol on hot weather especially noon time that caused the heat released/gas or something like that..

I started to pump my petrol @ night time or early in the morning to proved the teory..since then no such happened again.

I m not to sure..that's what i've been informed.

Happens to my Kancil also. But 99.9% of the time I pump at night, so my theory is when the car is parked under the sun the air in the petrol tank expands because of the heat. When you open the petrol tank cap, the air and some evaporated petrol escapes. It's no big problem.

On my bimmer, I pump 100% at night because that's the only fun time to drive. No hissing issues.

Salut

The explanation seems very logical. Heat causes gas expansion/evaporation... but what puzzles me is that my 318 doesn't have this even though driven and parked under same condition. Maybe 318's fuel cap is not air tight and pressure were released?
