Hi all sifu, I just own a UDM for 3 months and the problem keep coming and now I might need to change the aircond pump, piston ring, and gearbox also starting to feel problem coming. If I fix all that it might cost me 10k more or less, so I wonder what if I change engine and gearbox. How much does it cost if I change 2.5cc engine I heard it give u less headache compare to N46. Or if I change to Toyota 1jz turbo engine half cut. Any suggestion from all the sifu here....

Whatever you do please dont bastardize the German with Japs. Better buy toyota KE70 and put 1JZ much cheaper and you earn my respect

Ok, agree with your advise and sorry for any offensive statement i had made. Coz I saw alot of E46 or E36 they transplant it to jap heart. And my statement did mention to upgrade to BMW 2.5cc (don't know wat is tat engine code) how much does it cost?

Go for E46 half cut with M54B25 engine. Should cost you less than 10k I think. Overall 15k should be enuff with installation and wear and tear part of the engine,

what are the symptoms that urge you to change those?

Since he using N46 henjen I think he realise that its short of another 2 cylinder.

Losing engine oil suspect piston ring n need to do top overhaul. Gearbox not very responsive, if I not heard wrongly it might coz by the gearbox ecu. Air cond compressor motor got sound and leaking gas also. Engine sound very loud compare to last month.

Correct me if I am wrong but below should be the breakdown of your costs:

- Top overhaul RM3-4k
- GB rebuild RM6-7k
- Air-cond compressor replacement + labour & service RM2.3k

GB irresponsive highly unlikely to be caused by electronics.

whats the reason for changing piston rings? The N42/46 engines do tend to burn oil due to age but this is largely due to the bad valve seals from manufacture. Its not the piston rings :) altho could be if the previous owner neglect change or abuse the engine till kingdom come.

for GB can't comment la as most of us beemers tend to take advantage of the ultimate driving machine tag to the fullest haha...

Well if you wanna change, there are many M54 2.5lit half cuts these days around mudah, but they range between 8-15k, but to convert from 2.0 to 2.5 it could cause you further headache as the wiring and competency of the mech doing it. So better do a thorough study before committing. You could be jumping from the pot to the fire.

:)

Thks wingzee, the break down is almost same as wat I been told from the workshop. But wat I afraid is the problem keep coming on this engine.

I agreed with Iceduke, i face the same problem and changing the valve solved the problem. overall cost me RM1.3K.
Maybe u need to get second opinion. I normally does to 2 to 3 top shop in Klang valley,Pandan and 2 more in Subang....

its ok to change the engine to m54b25. but bare in mind, that engine also need to be taken care :D

I went and see 1 e46 318i(n42) converted to 320 manual for sale. But the car was really in bad condition, perhaps that why the owner want to sell.
If you are going to convert, check the competency level of your mechanic first. Later on if he "rojak" everything, u will regret.

Sharing my n42 experience, i did change the valve stem seal recently. Cost me RM1400+- including few other o-ring/seal/etc. Done in Penang. And it solve my white smoke problem =)

yeap agreed...competent mech is the most important. Btw kby bro...has the valve stem seal replacement solve the oil burning completely?

I can say so. No need topup in between service (10 000 km) anymore..
actually, during that time, my spark plug "pipe" was leaking badly. Maybe that thing also contributed to engine oil loss too

sbb...mine to share where you did urs at that price? thanks bro :)

Did at Pandah Indah....Albert, he is really good. Whenever realated to engine, I go to him, of course also get second opinion in Subang...I trust him more.

My n42 burn oil quite a lot. Is it the cause of the valve seal or both the piston ring?.
